Primary and Secondary Audiences

To begin, Kimberly Klacik is a Republican running for U.S. Congress. After going over Klacik's campaign ad and watching it through different perspectives, I believe the primary audience for this ad was towards Black Lives Matter supporters and the secondary audience for this ad was African American voters that keep voting Democrat. She starts the ad off by saying, "Do you believe Black Lives Matter?" As a supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, it caught my attention and made me want to keep listening. At the end of the campaign ad, Klacik says, "Democrats think they can control us forever, that we won't demand better and that we'll keep voting for them forever." I think this part of the ad was geared towards African American voters that feel the need to vote Democratic for the sake of their own people with no idea of what Democrats have done.

The primary message from this campaign add is that Black Lives do not matter to Democrats, as stated in capitalized black font throughout the video. The secondary message is that African American voters should not be afraid to vote Republican. This is supported by the end of the video when Klacik states, "Democrats think they can control us forever, that we won't demand better and that we'll keep voting for them forever."

Purpose of the Media

The purpose of the media is to reach out to Black Lives Matter supporters and African American voters and make them realize what the Democrats have not done to better the city of Baltimore. This is portrayed throughout the whole video while she is walking the real streets of Baltimore that are never shown. The streets are in her words, "crumbling infrastructures, abandoned homes, poverty, and crime." Klacik also talks about how the Democrats have been running Baltimore for 53 years and states the results of that. The results she says are, "Baltimore is one of the top 5 most dangerous cities in America, the murder rate in Baltimore is 10x the U.S. average, the Baltimore poverty rate is over 20%, and homicide, drug and alcohol deaths are skyrocketing in our city."

Analyze Techniques Used to Accomplish the Purpose

The techniques used to accomplish the purpose of the ad was the music. The music had a uplifting tone to get the viewer excited about having options to vote. Pathos: The ad incorporated interviews with current residents of Baltimore about defunding the police in that area. This is emotional for the viewer because the people are the ones living in Baltimore and know exactly what is needed. One man talks about how three of his sons have died in Baltimore City and believes it could be worse without police. She also shows the rundown buildings and trash while saying, "How can children live and play here" Logos: Kimberly Klacik uses statistics based on crime and poverty in Baltimore to showcase the purpose of the ad. Ethos: Throughout the video she is showing what the Democratic party has done to Baltimore by walking through the run-down side of the city.

Identify the Tone

After watching the campaign ad, the tone is geared more towards negative and angry. The tone is negative towards the Democratic party because she uses words and phrases such as, "The people that run Baltimore do not care", "They do not want you to see this", "betrayed us." Klacik addresses crime and poverty issues that the democrats have caused. These include "Baltimore is one of the top 5 most dangerous cities in America, the murder rate in Baltimore is 10x the U.S. average, the Baltimore poverty rate is over 20%, and homicide, drug and alcohol deaths are skyrocketing in our city." The tone is angry because Klacik is frustrated that the Democratic party has betrayed the African American community in Baltimore and no one is realizing it. She also says, "Democrats think black people are stupid" so it gives off an angry tone.

Impact of the Ad and its Effectiveness

As a supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, I came across this ad on Twitter. I decided to keep watching because the beginning started off with the question, "Do you think Black Lives Matter?" So, as far as impact, this ad could potentially impact voters who are open minded and are willing to sit and listen. I personally have mixed feelings with both parties. I agree with certain things from the Democratic party and from the Republican party. I think this could have been more effective if Kimberly Klacik included more about how she as a Republican would change the policies and helping the community. As someone who simply came across the video on social media, I would not know everything she has done to help the community unless I were to research more about her.
