I believe that the friction of the wheel makes the cart accelerate as well as the steep drops cause the cart to accelerate. The energy of the chains on the bottom of the rails have energy that push the wheels forward

The roller coaster needs momentum to gain speed. When there is energy pulling it/pushing it it gains speed.
