Before the war, they are not serious in their studies. They did not study and played everyday. During the war, the Japanese Occupation gave them the attitude of seriousness and let them grow mature. As a result, they became hardworking. The languages that they learned have changed. Before the war, the teenagers learnt English and Chinese. During the war, the Japanese forced them to learn Japanese. They learnt how to speak and write Japanese. The thing which remained the same is that they still learn languages. The National Anthem that they learnt how to sing and the way they went back to class have changed. Before the war, they sang Singapore's National Anthem, Majulah Singapura and they walked back to class. During the war, the Japanese taught them how to sing Japan's National anthem, Kimigayo and after that, they marched back to class. The thing which remained is they still sang National Anthem. They cannot protest and can only abide to the Japanese soldier's commands. The people and country who they have been taught to respect have changed. Before the war, they respected Singapore and the Singapore's president. The Singapore flag was raised in school every morning. During the war, they were forced to respect Japan and the Japanese Emperor. The Japanese flag was raised and they have to bow to the direction of the Japanese Emperor.
