1.      Extraction= natural resource exploitation= trashing the planet
  • First limit: natural resources (during the past 3 decades      1/3 of the planets natural resource space has been consumed)
  • U.S.: less than 4%of original forest left; 40% undrinkable water (if everyone consumes like the U.S., we would need 3-5 planets) they use 3rd world countries for material because their own is already on their limits 
  • 80% of original forest in the world: gone 

2.      Production= using energy to mix natural resources with toxic chemicals to make toxic contaminated products
  • over 100.000 synthetic chemicals in use
  • “Toxics in-toxics out”: toxics that get produced in the factories goes into our home/ bodies
  • Food with highest level of contaminants: human breast milk (lots of women are factory workers) who come from already trashed countries with no other option but to work with toxic chemicals
  • Pollution: over 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals a year in the U.S.

3.      Distribution= selling the toxic-contaminated products as quickly as possible (low pricesà low wages)
  • Externalised costs: caused by producer, carried by whole society
  • People from step 1 paid with loss of natural resources; people from step 2 paid with loss of clean air; people from step 3 paid by having to cover their own health insurance so that consumers can pay little prices for their products and buy more stuff)

4.      Consumption= ultimate purpose
  • planned obsolescence (product is planned to break) & perceived obsolescence (convinces us to throw away stuff that is in perfect condition)
  • media tells us what’s wrong/right 
  • work-watch-spend-treadmill (never ending cycle): work> get home (exhausted)> watch TV to relax (ads tell us what’s new on the market)> go to the mall to buy new stuff> poor so we have to work again… NO HAPPINESS

5.      Disposal= goes in landfill
  • pollution of air, land, water (e.g. burning garbage releases toxics from stage 2 into air)
  • climate change!
  • Companies don’t want to deal with garbage: export trash to already trashed countries (stage 1)

Solution: recycling 
  • Not enough
  • A lot can’t be recycled because of too much toxics or too many layers of material (metal, plastic)
