There once was a girl named Yvette. Her home was filled with anger, grief and her grandmother made all the decisions. An oppressive life was all she had ever known.

Hatred

Liar! Thief! Selfish little beast! You little hypocrite! You liar! You selfish beast! You greedy little beast!

On a trip with friends, she ended up in a gypsy camp and she saw a glimpse of a life she never thought possible.

A prophesy that will change her forever

- which beautiful lady like to hear her fortune?

Ah I see! " there is a dark man who never lived in a house. He loves you. The other people are treading on your heart. Thy will tread on your heart till you think it is dead. But the dark man will blow the one spark up into fire again. Good fire. You will see what good fire.

'The old gypsy dreamed something about you. She said: Be braver in your body or your luck will leave you. Listen to the voice of water. '

What does that mean?

'She says she don't know. '

Will she leave her reality behind she loathes so much and will she choose for the Gypsy life style, which is full of vitality and freedom, which she so desires?

Will she choose for a life with Leo, A civilized man, like everybody expects her to, or will she choose for life with the gypsies who doesn't care about what society thinks of him and lives the way he wants to live?

Will she let society choose the life she is going to live or will she choose her own path and let her inner self control her decisions? Will she be brave enough to leave everything behind and start all over?

The virgin and the gypsy:

Are you brave enough to let your heart decide your next move?

Coming soon to a store near you.

Summary of the story

She-who-was-Cynthia leaves her family behind: the Vicar, who later becomes the rector, and her two daughters Lucille and Yvette. She runs off with a young, despicable man.

The vicar gets a rectory in Papplewick and starts living there with his two daughters, his mother (the Mater), his sister (Aunt Cissie) and his brother-in-law (Uncle Fred).

The Mater is the one who dominates the house. Aunt Cissie serves the Mater and has therefore lost her own life. Uncle Fred is out in town most of the time. The Rector makes sarcastic little jokes all the time and adores Yvette mostly. The girls grow up in that environment. Yvette wants to get married to someone who is stronger than her. She doesn’t want a man that adores her, because that bores her so and it makes her feel beastly. Lucille is way more philosophical than her sister
and she shouldn’t like to fall in love, because it scares her a bit.

Lucille, Yvette, the Framleys and Leo Wetherell, go out driving one day and meet some Gypsies. The gypsy lady asks the girls whether they would like their future read. They all do. In the meantime Yvette and a gypsy man holding a baby have a connection. The man looks at her the entire time. Yvette feels that this man is stronger than her. The gypsy lady tells Yvette that a dark man without a home loves her and other people tread on her heart until she thinks it’s dead. The dark man will blow a spark into it again.

Later, aunt Cissie tries to collect the money for a Window she wants to have in her church as a memorial to all the men of the parish who had fallen. Yvette organized a play called ‘Mary in the Mirror’ with which she collected some money, but when aunt Cissie asks for that money, she sees that most of it is gone. Yvette secretly gave the gypsies some money for the fortune telling, but she doesn’t dare say to her family. Only Lucille knows. There’s a small fight and later at night, when Yvette is in bed, aunt Cissie opens her door and starts cursing at her. When Yvette is about to scream, aunt Cissie closes the door again and leaves. The day after, there is
another fight again, because Yvette throws a mirror on the ground. It didn’t
break, but apparently Granny is very scared of misfortune. Eventually Granny
makes a nasty remark about Cynthia having left her kids. Lucille and Yvette
become angry with her, but when the Rector asks for clarification, Granny lies
to him about what she said. During this fight Yvette realizes that she hates living
in a house with this family. She’d like to live like the gypsies.

A few days later, the gypsy man drives his cart past Yvette’s house. He sees Yvette at the window and comes to the door to sell stuff. When Aunt Cissie is gone, he tells Yvette to come back to the gypsy camp on Friday when he is there. Yvette wonders if he can have power over her. She doesn’t respond to him, but on Friday her mind is with the gypsy, while her body is still at home. The next day, she was at a party
and Leo asked her to get engaged to him. Yvette doesn’t want it, because she
doesn’t like Leo the way he is. She wants something adventurous like the gypsy,
not a house-dog like Leo. Leo likes Yvette even more for rejecting him.

A few days later Yvette goes out cycling and ends up at the gypsy camp. She has some food with them and she notices that the gypsy has control over her. The Eastwoods, a woman who is nearly divorced and about to marry an ex-soldier called Eastwood, come up to the camp to warm their hands by the fire. It turns out that the gypsy knows the ex-soldier from the war.

Yvette becomes friendly with the Eastwoods. The ex-soldier likes her and she likes him. She has a conversation with the Eastwoods about falling in love with the gypsy. The woman is in shock, but the man fully supports Yvette. Later the Rector becomes aware of her friendship with the Eastwoods and he doesn’t like it. He is afraid Yvette will take after She-who-was-Cynthia, and be dishonest, since the woman is nearly divorced and already hooking up with another man and that man is only together with the older woman for her money. Yvette writes a letter to the
Eastwoods to tell them that she is not allowed to contact them any longer. But
she despises her father for this. She wants to be held by the Gypsy, only for a
moment. She hates her family more and more.

She meets the gypsy by accident while she’s cycling and he’s selling stuff. He tells her that the old gypsy woman had a dream about her in which she said: Be braver in your heart, or you lose your game. She said it this way: Be braver in your body, or your luck will leave you. And she said as well: Listen for the voice of water.” He
also tells her that they will break camp next week and go up North. Yvette
tells him she might come see him before that to say goodbye.

She didn’t go. She stayed at home. The river behind the house was full and floods. Yvette is saved by the gypsy. He takes her upstairs to the room where the chimney is, because that part will stand. He tells her to take her clothes off and rub herself with a towel so she won’t die of pneumonia. He takes off his clothes as well. They hold each other in bed to warm each other and fall asleep.

When she wakes up the police is there to save her, but the gypsy is gone. She goes to the camp to thank him but the camp has left. She later receives a letter from him:

"Dear Miss, I see in the paper you are all right after your ducking, as is the same with me. I hope I see you again one day, maybe at Tideswell cattle fair, or maybe we come that way again. I come that day to say goodbye! and I never said it, well, the water give no time, but I live in hopes. Your obdt. servant Joe Boswell." That is the first time she knows his name.

The end.
