Advancements in technology do not increase our hopes for the future as there would be disharmony in the society. Disharmony refers to social tensions between different races. For instance, in Singapore in 2012, Amy Cheong, a NTUC membership assistant director made insensitive remarks about Malay weddings on her personal Facebook account. She said that Malay weddings should be banned and this had become a big issue as in Singapore, we value racial harmony a lot. Many online netizens gave mixed comments about the post, some saying that we should forgive her and some should not. Even the deputy prime minister criticised her, saying that what she is doing will threaten our social cohesion. She has since been fired. From this incident, we can see that social cohesion is very important and we should treat other races with respect. The lack of organs supplied has resulted in a shortage to develop, with over 100,000 Americans waiting for an organ transplant at any given time and only 8,000 Americans becoming organ donors after death each year, according to Organ Procurement and Transport Network. It is thus no surprise to read about reports on illegal procurement of these highly valued organs, where people exploit their authority to harvest the organs of the powerless. In 2006, investigations made by human rights lawyer David Matas and former Canadian member of parliament David Kilgour suggested that tens and thousands of prisoners have been killed on demand to supply an ongoing illegal organ transplant industry in China. This human rights of vulnerable people, not just prisoners, becomes violated and as such, people could feel unsafe, thus feelings of distrust in the government might arise. Similarly, people suffering from poverty might resort to illegally selling their own organs for money. On February this year, a Al Jazeera reported that Indonesian police have broken up a three person trafficking ring. An estimated of 30 individuals had sold their kidneys for $5,000 apiece. This is a cause for concern as donors might not receive proper surgical treatment during the removal of their organs, hence putting their lives at risk. With advancements in technology in the form of automated robots that can carry out various jobs, the industry will find that it is more profitable to use these technologies over providing jobs for the people. For example, in the agriculture industry, robots are already being used to harvest crops in greenhouses. In this future, advanced sensors embedded in fields, waterways, irrigation systems and tractors will combine with machine-learning systems, genome-identifying devices and data dashboards to give rise to a generation of smart farming technology that will have the capacity to sense and respond to its environment in a way that maximizes production while minimizing negative impacts. These advancements in farm and genome-scale technologies are boosting the efficiency of modern farming, allowing crops to be farmed and harvested in such a large scale such that human labor is largely unnecessary. The implications of this is that for countries in the industrial world, this growing automation probably means the continued decline of rural life. The issue of labor is even more important for the economies of the global south, where there are fewer urban job opportunities.
