Ultrasound was first used in medicine in 1956 in Glasgow. Since then this technology has been utilized extensively within the hospital and clinic setting. It is a safe and effective diagnostic tool and results are available quickly. This is also a painless and non-invasive procedure. Ultrasound works by utilizing sound waves that strikes an object and bounces, or echoes, back revealing an image. As healthcare providers we are used to seeing ultrasound used in labor and delivery, but this technology is utilized throughout the hospital, from emergency room to surgery and even assists in placing central lines and peripheral catheters in patients with difficult access. However, conventional ultrasound machines are bulky, heavy, and difficult to transport around the hospital.

Since this technology is so new and just being released to hospitals there are not many cons known at this time. One would be the relying on wi-fi for connectivity. If needed in an emergency and the electricity is out there would be no way to upload the information. Also, with a battery life of 3 hours when scanning it would be pertinent that the device be plugged in and charged after every use.

As someone who has worked extensively with ultrasound when placing peripherally inserted central catheters I think this device is brilliant. Often times I would be called to the OR in an emergency for PICC placement and having to roll a large, heavy ultrasound machine could really slow down progress. The thought that I would be able to carry the probe in my pocket is very convenient. It also opens up the use of ultrasound to many different specialties and in clinics. Ultrasound in itself is a great diagnostic tool and with this small device it makes the diagnosing process so much faster and easier.
