When is it appropriate to use formative assessment?

Formative assessment is appropriate throughout the lesson because it helps teachers know who and what the students are understanding. Formative assessment helps teachers modify the lesson according to the student's needs. An example of formative assessment is asking students for a "thumbs up, thumbs down, or side thumbs" on how they feel about the lesson.

When is it appropriate to use summative assessment?

Summative assessment is appropriate at the end of a unit/chapter/semester. The power point cooking up assessment, gives us a good way to remember that summative assessment is a SUM of what the student learned. Summative assessment evaluates what the student understands and what the student doesn't understand at the end of the lesson. An example of a summative assessment is a end of the term multiple choice exam.

Opinion of Standardized Testing:

I think that standardized tests should be used as a tool to help determine the strengths and weaknesses of a student's learning. I don't think standardized test should hold teachers accountable because there are many factors that impact the results of the test (test anxiety, sleepiness, hunger). I also don´t agree on the ¨teaching to the test"strategy. I think that children are not truly learning when they are feeling stressed.

Why are lawmakers so sure that teachers will be more accountable if results are made public and student promotion depends on them? Is this a good idea?

I don´t think that this is a good idea at all! I believe that lawmakers are sure that if results are made public, teachers will feel more pressure to ´´improve scores.´´ However, I don´t believe scores will improve if teachers are constantly pressured. It´s also unethical to make results public because every student deserves privacy. Student promotion should also not be entirely dependent on ONE test. I believe that what a student accomplishes throughout the year is much more valuable than the results of one test.

When should CFU occur? What are two things a teacher should remember when CFU?

Checking for understanding is vital throughout the lesson but can also occur at the end of the lesson. Checking for understanding, with a strategy such as an exit slip, helps the teacher understand what the students understood that class day. Checking for understanding is also important throughout the lesson because it helps the teacher receive input on how the lesson is going and if there is a need for modifications.

2 Check for Understanding Strategies: Advertisement & Exit Slips

In the article ´´53 ways to CFU¨ two recommended strategies are:
1. The students can create an advertisement with visual and textual information that reflects the lesson.
2. The teacher can require the students to reflect or answer a question as they leave the classroom.
I think that as a teacher, I would use these the most in my classroom. I have had professors and teachers use these and I believe they are fast and effective strategies.
