Given the limited budget, a collaborative approach is likely to yield a more sustainable and strategic outcome than a purely competitive one. While it’s natural for departments to advocate for their individual priorities, fostering collaboration can help identify overlapping goals and enable more efficient use of resources.

Here’s why collaboration makes sense:

Interconnected priorities
Training staff on safe digital practices can significantly strengthen cybersecurity protocols without requiring separate, large-scale investments.

Shared ownership
By working together, the departments can co-design a training program that includes cybersecurity awareness, creating a dual-purpose initiative. This would allow the organisation to address both needs within a single framework.

By engaging the manager in refining the rollout or tailoring processes within teams, you maintain regulatory alignment while showing openness to operational feedback.

Involving the manager in identifying pain points and co-creating solutions fosters ownership and reduces resistance. For instance, if the concern is around added paperwork, perhaps automation or streamlined reporting can help maintain efficiency.

In this situation, a collaborative approach would be far more effective than avoiding the conflict.

Collaboration brings all voices to the table, allowing team members to express their concerns, clarify misunderstandings, and align on common goals. Much of the tension is likely due to ambiguity around responsibilities and perceived inequality in resource distribution. A collaborative approach helps co-create clear frameworks for decision-making, task allocation, and resourcing that everyone has a stake in.

Collaborative approach. There maybe a way to stagger the funding or agree for part payments. Both are essential so makes sense if they acknowledge limited resources and work together to find a way to achieve something.

A collaborative is needed here both of these are important, perhaps staff could be notified of a scaled back training program due to the extra funds we are spending on Cybersecurity this communication could reference recent cyber attacks to give this approach more weight.

Some sort of a compromise would be needed here the regulatory standards must be met and given the level of the employee resistance to change they would know this. I believe workshopping this as to how we can meet the operational efficiency targets whilst meeting standards could be beneficial as the Manager would feel heard regarding their concerns and they would feel the solutions suited them as it was a collaborative approach.

This is definitely collaborative the short term solution is to bring the employees together to discuss the roles and responsibilities if there are overlaps then deal with who would work be responsible for these and set clear guidelines the longer term approach is ensuring all employees have a clear agreed to duty statement.
