Those items were thought of as good fortune for the up coming year. As for poor people, the Lords usually gave the peasants food, ale, and food and some bread for the family dog. The peasants would give the Lord homemade ale. I guess you could call it a tradition then. My sister and I wake up and get to open 1 gift before the rest of the family arrives. Once my grandpa, and two grandmas come to our house we eat breakfast which ALWAYS has biscuits and cinnamon buns and grapes, the rest is interchangeable. After we eat my sister, brother and I get to open presents while the rest of the family watches kind of awkwardly. After that's over we all talk about life while A Christmas Story plays on the TV on repeat.
