The Subtle message at the top of this ad " be sweet to your community" ties some sense of responsibility to get the vaccine to the person. Donuts and ones community have very little to do with each other but the incentive to get a free donut while also helping out ones community in a time where community seems so small may encourage on to get the vaccine.

This instagram post shows family and community and people enjoying the others surrounding them, the text mentions "In this case the positive affect makes the ads more salient, causing them to grab our attention. But emotional ads also take advantage of the role of affect in information processing. We tend to like things more when we are in good moods, and—because positive affect indicates that things are OK—we process information less carefully when we are in good moods. Thus the spontaneous approach to persuasion is particularly effective when people are happy (Sinclair, Mark, & Clore, 1994), and advertisers try to take advantage of this fact"(Priciples of Social Psychology, ch. 5.2). The Uber Ad does this well it shows people being happy enjoying company of others encouraging people to go get vaccinated so they can be around family friends and strangers again.

Covid-19 brought change to advertising, many companies that had nothing to do with vacations decided to advertise getting the Covid-19 vaccine. Two companies I chose to put my focus on is Krispy Kreme and Uber. Both companies insecticides the vaccine, Krispy Kreme giving away a free donut with proof of vaccination and uber working with the Whitehouse and Walgreens to give free rides to vaccination sites. “But persuasion can also have more positive outcomes. Persuasion is used to encourage people to donate to charitable causes, to volunteer to give blood, and to engage in healthy behaviors. The dramatic decrease in cigarette smoking (from about half of the U.S. population who smoked in 1970 to only about a quarter who smoke today) is due in large part to effective advertising campaigns”(Principals of Social Psychology, ch. 5.2)

WHY COMMUNITY

Some might ask why is community important when discussing the Covid-19 vaccine? And why are companies using community to encourage their consumers to get the vaccine? Well from personal experience that I'm sure many can relate when the First Covid lockdown happened I lost most of my community. I went from never being home to being stuck in my 3 bedroom apartment with my parents and sharing my room with my sister who was also never really home. The days before I was working at Disneyland a place where I got to see people from all over the world and suddenly what was supposed to be two weeks off work became a year and a half. As a full time student who also worked two jobs my communities were school and work, both of those places were taken away from me so soon and I felt like the communities of people I surrounded myself with were no longer there, sure we had social media and online classes but it was not the same as being in person. Companies that targeted their audiences knew that community played a huge part in bringing back this culture of togetherness in the world outside of digital learning and virtual get togethers.

I decided to take my family to Disneyland this day because the new star wars ride had just opened. Lockdowns we’re just starting to be talked about, during this day I got a message from my school that campus was going to be closed for the next two weeks. My dad was checking news updates and in the early afternoon we heard Disney wouldn’t be closing its gates, later that afternoon they said they would again just for two weeks. If was raining that day pretty hard so after we got on the new ride we decided to leave that was my last day stepping on disney property i didn’t have a chance to say goodbye to my co workers. I had no idea i would lose this community of people.

HOW COMMUNITY INCENTIVSED ME GETTING THE VACCINE

As a young adult all I wanted was to be surrounded by people my age school wasn't an option and neither was work because both were places that had large gatherings of people. So when I heard I was eligible to get the vaccine I signed up right away since, I also worked with kids I got my vaccine in April 2021. While both school wasn't open and I wasn't asked back to work yet I was sad that I couldn't be surrounded by that community yet I knew me getting it then would speed up the process of getting back to work. I was finally asked back to work in July while being vaccinated wasn't required by Disney to work, I quickly found out all the people I was surrounded by at work were already vaccinated, and it made me happy to know that the possibility of another lockdown was unlikely.

WHY IS PERSUATION IMPORTANT IN ADVERTISING

Persuation is what gets people to buy a product or more general it gets a person to do something you want. In the two example I sharred both had an equal goal, they wanted people to get the Covid-19 vaccine. They used what is called thoughtful messege processing, to ecourge people to get the vaccine. The textbook says “When an advertiser presents a message that he or she hopes will be processed thoughtfully, the goal is to create positive cognitions about the attitude object in the listener” ( Principles of Social Psychology, Ch. 5.2). The subtle message of community through pictures or the slight mention of community makes a consumer think that their actions are not only rewarding themselves but also they are doing something good.
