The Berlin Wall was a western barrier built in 1961 by the goverment in East Germany to keep citizens within the walls, and prevent intruders from accessing Eastern Berlin. It was symbolized the division between the Eastern soviet and Western US. Containment was a strategy used by the United States during the cold war. This strategy was used in efforts to prevent communism from spreading. They used this specific method in hopes to avoid front combat against the Soviet Union. Which eventually led to being involved in the Korean and Vietnam War. Deterrence, discouraging an enemy from taking any critical actions.During the cold war, the US and USSR both threatened eachother with nuclear arsenals to prevent eachother from lauching any nuclear attacks that could cause harm. Iron Curtain, an ideological barrier set up by the Soviet Union . It was simply the division of Europe into 2 separate appposed sides. It sealed off itself, dependent Eastern, and and Central European allies away from the West and noncommunist areas. The term Iron curtain was simply a metaphor from the 19th centure. It came to be used once again by Winston Churchill in a speech in may 5, 1946. Satellite Nation, A satellite nation is a country that is politically and economically dominated by a greater omnipotent (I learned this fancy word from an anime >0< ) nation. Satellite nations at this time wee countires in Eastern Europe that were oficially Independent but were under the control os the Soviet Union. They used these countries against the West.

USA vs USSR

The United States had a democratic/ capitalism goverment where citizens elect leaders and people can own private property and businesses. They had alliances with NATO, also known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. As for the USSR (Soviet Union) a goverment of communism/ dictatorship. The goverment would have control over everything and there would be only 1 political party.

Chinese Civil War 1927-1949

The chinese Civil War was practically began over a disagreement on who would have control over Chinas goverment. It was the Nationalist side that was lead by Chiang Kai-shek against the Communists led by Mao Zedong. since they both shared very different ideals and political beliefs it led to the start of the Chinese Civil War. In the end Mao Zedong and the Communist won and took over Chinas final say in the governments republic. Most Nationalists then left off to an Island in Taiwan where they set up their of choice of government. Although this still brings quite a bit of conflict to this day because China wants to claim Taiwan as pet of their territory.

Korean War 1950-1953

North Korea was allied with the Soviet Union and China, led by Kim il-sung. As for South Korea, they were allied with the United States and the United Nations led by Syngman Rhee, and Douglas MacArthur who played a big role with the UN. This war was started because of the division of Korea, into a communist North and a democratic South. North Korea attempted to take over with communism, but the US and it’s allies fought back with the method, containment. In the end, both countries remained apart to this day.

Cuban Missile Crisis (October 16-29, 1962)

Groups and leaders involved were John F. Kennedy representing the US, Nikita Khrushchev with the Soviet Union, and Cuba led by Fidel Castro. This conflict was started because the Soviet Union wanted to protect a communist ally (Europe) and challenge the US, the fire they placed missiles in Cuba to have Leverage and control. President Kennedy set up a Naval Blockade on Cuba and demanded the Soviet Union for them to be removed. Eventually a deal was made for the missiles to be removed in exchange for the US to not invade Cuba.

Vietnam War 1955-1976

Groups and leaders involved were North Vietnam, communists that were led by Ho Chi Minh, and South Vietnam who were anti communists and were led by leaders like Ngo Dinh Diem. South Vietnam was supported by the United States. Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon were also involved by sending troops allying with the US. North Vietnam wanted to create a government of communism and democracy, while the US and South Vietnam wanted to prevent the spread communism mostly just in SouthEast Asia. The US was pulling in troops, but even then, North Vietnam managed to get a hold of the South. Communism had now unified Vietnam.

End of war

The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989. This was and is seen as one of the largest symbolism as to the multiple years of war of East Berlin and West Berlin, the endlessly and restless debate over Communism and Democracy. It was all finally over. The East German government finally gave into letting West Berlin people freely come into the territory. People from the West were standing and protesting on the other side of the wall which was also symbolic, proving that the Soviet Union was leaning towards the failure of leverage. Germany was once again unified and the end of the Cold War was officially marked.
