The highest rank was the emperor, but he was a decoy. The actual ruler was the shogun. He was the supreme military commander. Next are the daimyo. Ieyasu defeated his enemies in the Battle of Sekigahara in the 1600s.
By winning this battle he earned the loyalty of the daimyo, and three years later became the ruler/shogun of Japan.
