In the twelfth-century of Rome, the Roman civilization shifted from being a monarchy to an oligarchic republic to an immense empire.
It began as an iron-hut village that was founded in the mid-8th century B.C.E.
In 616 B.C.E, the Etruscans, Rome's sophisticated neighbours, seized power but were dethroned in 509 B.C.E. Rome conquered most of the remaining parts of Italy and the payed attention to to the overseas. By the 1st century B.C.E, they ruled Spain, North Africa, and Greece.

The Romans were familiar with road construction. Roads were a means of moving goods from one place to another. Anyone could walk or go to Rome roads, drive livestock, carriages, and so on. The roads ranged from small, rough roads, riding roads, tunnels and freeways. According to the 12th edition, the minimum width of the Roman road was 2.45m in the straight section and 4.9m in the bent section.

Rome's road network was important in maintaining and expanding the stability of the empire. The Roman corps was able to build the road quickly, and some roads were used even after thousands of years.
