The image i chose for the background represents the a judge laying sentencing or criminals. The judge loud crack of their gavel is a metaphoric symbol of the having the last say so. The Criminal Justice System has been the way of sentencing citizens for crimes they’ve committed. Many have voiced their opinion on the injustices that occur in our Criminal Justice system, such as, increasing time sentencing ,but many can agree that our criminal justice system needs to be reformed. With time the criminal justice system has changed ,but many prisoners rights were put into question when they were being unfairly treated.

Locked in is a book by John Pfaff and he focuses on how many of our american citizens are "locked" up in jail to date hinting to why the title of the book is called "Locked In". This problem is and is going to stay a crisis of our age and it needs to be resolved fully or slight but immediate changes need to happen quickly over time. He is telling us to think of other reasons as to why there is a problem of mass incarceration. We all know the war or drugs problem ,but has the behavior of the prosecutors changed.

The New Jim Crow book also focuses on mass incarceration and the War On Drugs situation. Decades ago our Criminal Justice System was built and thrived off of inequality. Our current form of prisonment wasn’t always how they punished criminals. With time the criminal justice system has changed ,but many prisoners rights were put into question when they were being unfairly treated. This book also gives the quote " we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it.".

Prisons are at maximum capacity at this point and it’s costing americans millions combined to keep them in prison. “Housing these prisoners costs the United States approximately $80 billion a year, and the federal prison system is operating at 40 percent over capacity”(Mandatory Minimum Sentencing). Mass incarceration is an issue that needs to be taken care of and put under control unless americans are willing to continually put forth millions that will eventually increase into an even more outrageous amount.

I learned that this socia issue has occurred since the beginning. Many are now wanting and encouraging changes to be made within the criminal justice system. We need to think of causes for mass incarceration and think who is putting them i jail instead of what case they were charged on. Was the prosecutors behavior just and fair? How did the prosecutors behavior change with different cases. A way to solve this could be focusing on the legal aspect of things and not only on how the person got locked up in the first place.

Criminal Justice Reform can be said to be most important for getting people of color the justice they deserve. Racism and social inequality play a huge role into why the criminal justice system needs to be reformed. There are a vast number of minorities put in prison for a long period of time because of their race. Many people have been stopped by police because they seem more suspicious because of their skin color. “Racial profiling became common practice against other minorities as well: United States law enforcement agencies targeted black and Chinese people in most urban areas because it was generally believed these two groups were criminal by nature. Such discrimination continued well into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries,” (Quezzaire, Pilar, and Tracey M. DiLascio). Many authorities today take advantage of their powers and target citizens who they believe are criminals. These injustices help increase the rate of these individuals put in prison today.
