Juliet also bonded with her best friend Sophie over a shared affinity for reading. As Juliet gets to know a few of the more prominent members of the society, they open up to her about how reading saved them from giving up during the war. Through Isola's adoration of the Bronte sisters, Dawsey's discovery of Charles Lamb, and other members infatuation with literary masterpieces, the society was able to band together and raise morals. The society members used the act of reading as a form of escape from their devastating reality. Reading gave them the ability to keep a sense of sanity.
