Refugees- The people that left their home of Cuba, left because they were experiencing political persecution and violations of their human rights. They came to America by boat, seeking protection from the country they came from.

Asylum- The US was the place in which many Cubans sought Asylum. The country provided protection from the communist state they had fled, and the refugees were given the right to stay temporarily because it was the first country they had come to from the state they had left.

International Migration- Because the Cuban citizens that migrated to the US crossed international borders to get here, they took part in international migration; if they had not crossed the borders, it would have been classified as internal migration.

Pull Factors- A Pull Factor is something that attracts a person to another place. For Cuban citizens, the US had the pull factors of freedom and opportunities for jobs and a new life.

Push Factors-A push factor is something that makes a person want to leave a place. Cuba’s strict government and political persecution made people want to leave the country and move somewhere else.

Remittances- People who had already fled Cuba and made it to the US would sometimes send money to relatives and friends who had not been able to go yet. The money would be used to help those people with daily expenses and eventually allow them to move to the US as well.
