Mental health is so important in school, if children’s mental health was cared for in the way it deserves, many problematic behaviors would decrease. Mental health would increase their grades, relationships and ultimately set them up for a better future. Unfortunately, it seems like some schools hire the school counselor and are unsure exactly what they need from them. There needs to be more clarity that the school counselor can provide the additional enrichment like the Social Emotional Learning and also provide smaller group or individual counseling for those falling into the Tiers that need it. In my experience with a school counselor, she only did individual or small group counseling. She never went into the classroom to teach about important skills. However, she was able to recognize problem behaviors and refer them to get them the help they needed. The school counselor I interviewed goes into classrooms and teaches lessons, but she is often thrown into other duties as the administration didn’t have a concrete plan of what he wanted to accomplish. She is trying to make it up as she gauges what the students need.
