It is important to make your lessons rigorous in order to challenge your students. If they have to think more about something and use new or different strategies, they will be working their brain and more likely remember the information. Learning has to challenge students a bit and not be so easy that they do the work and move on from it and not give it a second thought.

Rigor is defined as strict precision or inflexibility. What educators are looking for when they say work needs to be rigorous is they want work to be more challenging. Perhaps rigorous just sounds more intimidating than challenging.

Rigor is the students' abilities to develop a deeper understanding than what's shown at face value. The ability to analyze critically, creatively, and independently comes not from stacking piles of work for our students, but from their own effort stemmed from their curiosity to discover the unknown.

For me, rigor is a work ethic scenario where one is dedicated to the task at hand, such as making perfect pasta, something that seems easy but takes years of nuance to fully appreciate and define what your version of "good" is. It's an extension of who and where the students see themselves being, and being rigorous is to make sure they open their own opportunities using the tools in a practical way, so it's important to build that academic ethos and lead from example by being thorough and inquisitive as an instructor, and creating interesting opportunities for learners to engage in the practice.

I'm glad that I read rigor is not increasing student work. That is the typical definition I think of when I think of the word rigor. It turns out that rigor comes more from what students do. It challenges their thinking and new and interesting ways. Rigor is driven by the curiosity of the student and stretches their thinking. You can read easy books and still have them be rigorous. The goal is to get the student to dive deeper into their level of sophisticated thinking.

To me "rigor" means something that is challenging and rigid or inflexible. I think back to my time at University and I compare it to classes I took at community college. The classes at University were much more rigorous. They pushed me out of my comfort zone and held firm to the standards of the assignment. They were very strict and inflexible in what they were looking for quality and content wise. I think this makes better students who know what they are capable of.

What rigor means to me is that it is something that will be challenging. I never thought that it was when people were flooded with so much work, but something that made you struggle for the end goal. As teachers we want to challenge the students thinking and push them to their true potential. It would be important that I find ways to make activities interesting but also challenging.
