Hinton develops the theme through the setting by making more haunting or scary points in the story at night and the happier points in the story in the day. When Johnny stabs the soc and Dally dies, the scenes are at night, when Ponyboy says his poem in the church, it is day. She develops the theme through charter by making a good and evil side of the situation and having the protagonists seem good and then have some of them die as a way of making you feel sad for the main protagonist. She also develops theme through the plot by having bad plots such as characters dying right after or before a good plot, this gives a break in the time of stress for the character.
