The case vignette was fairly vague as it says Josh is "hard to understand" but it does not specify in which way, i.e are his sentences grammatically incorrect or is it his speech sounds that are unclear, also there are no examples of his language so its difficult to determine in which areas he requires help.

Josh's speech currently is closer to the level of an 18-24 month old as he can make requests and uses 2/3 key words. Was a late talker (first words at 18months). Family history- late talkers on father's side. Play- not very interested in pretend play, perhaps due to the lack of understanding of absent objects. Cognitive difficulties too perhaps- need to be assessed further?

Teacher says he understands better - is this the case or has he learnt to copy what others are doing? His diet, social skills and friendships don’t seem to suggest another disorder such as autism. he prefers physical play, could be because he doesn’t have the language skills to take part in imaginative games, running around requires less talking. Mum worked as a nurse so can assume a level of parental education & language heard at home. However Dad may work a lot as a business owner so Josh could only be getting input from one parent.

it was interesting how the CATALISE panel doesn't class DLD as a child with another "differentiating condition". Is this because their speech and language delay could be solely due to a co-existing medical condition ? such as autism?
