Group Discussion Strategies

We always hear how important it is to keep students engaged in class so immediately we jump to group discussion. However, group discussion is not effective unless it's done in an purposeful way. After reading the list of the varieties of discussion set ups, I realized that in order pull off these activities, it takes practice and a lot of planning. Although it may seem like group discussion is less work for you, you really need to think critically about how you are going to ask what questions and when. You cannot engage students by consistently lecturing for a significant amounts of time and then asking vague, open ended questions. We need to push our students farther by being intentional with our work.

After growing up in the athletic and art world, in my opinion, the arts are home to some of the scariest parents. There are going to be parents who think their kid is the best and deserve leads and solos. I think especially as a young teacher, I need to feel confident in holding my ground. In order to prevent problems with those parents, I would need to make sure my syllabus is very clear and also reach out to my administration when I needed help or advice.

Like I mentioned in the "Working with Families" section, it is crucial that I have a clear syllabus. A clear syllabus proactively solves most conflicts you could come across. I also think a syllabus that outlines policies effectively will help hold myself accountable to ensure that I am treating students equally and not accidentally letting some kids get away with things that they shouldn't. In order to set up consistent and effective routines within my classroom, it is important that I start with an clear outline of all my expectations which can by found in the syllabus.

I think all the technology we have learned about this semester can be used in my future classroom in a very effective way. However, I think it could be dangerous to try and use these tools but ending causing more distraction than engagement. That's why I like to refer to the SAMF model in attempt to classify and analyzing if the activity is redefinition, modification, augmentation, or substitution. I think it is a good think to have a variety of those four categories.

Their strategies seem effective and always seem focused on what will help the students, not just the school. I think if we had more minority teachers, maybe teaching culturally relevant material wouldn't be such a challenge? These teachers would already have a widened lens and would know that students in their classrooms come different experiences which leads to different values/focuses in school.

It is important that we keep up with ways to engaged students, however, we do walk a line of keeping assignments accessible to students. For example, if the school does not utilize one on ones, and you assign a project to do online, some students may struggle to complete the project due to limited access to wifi and might be scared to talk to you about it.

At the end of the day, I could care less about how the music sounds as long as they are trying their best, working together, and thinking critically about how what we're doing in class relates to them.

The classroom in some aspects should be considered a blank slate. Each morning you enter the room, you can decide what kind of attitude you are going to have and that directly effects the students. You get to create an atmosphere of learning, respect, and fun.
