Different people, different perception which is depends on the sensitivity of senses and how well your knowledge (brain) to give an output. As future Urban Designer or Landscape Architecture, you need to be more sensitive towards your surrounding by uplifting your capability to do inventory, analysis, synthesis and design proposal through al the senses.

The most valuable and dominant sense is vision. All the data are gathered mostly via your vision. That's why you need to take a good care about your eyes. Everything you do, you will use your eyes first to evaluate what you see before you make an action or a judgement.

This perceptual dimensions is related to the value of Imageability of a city. Additionally, you also will use it during your serial vision study, which you try to identify the place of content of the routes that you choose in the urban area.

Genus Loci or Spirit of the Place is common term to classify any place with a strong or bold character that build the ambiance on particular area (sense of place). For example, China Town has a vivid Genus Loci throughout the architecture style of the building, the activity of the community and the plant materials planted. Genus Loci basically give an inspiration for the Urban Designer or Landscape Architect to propose a suitable development in urban area.

There are many terminologies in this chapter that you need to understand and adapt it in your Urban Design Studio. 

All in all, the value of the perceptual dimension of urban design is the emphasis placed on people and how they perceive, value and both draw meaning from and add meaning to the urban environment.
