Around 71% of the earth is made of water, while only 3% is fresh water, on which life is dependent. Out of which, 2.4% of water is locked in polar ice caps. So every one survives on the remaining 0.6% of water. Life is totally dependent on water bodies such as rivers and lakes, as they are an source of fresh water. They are commercially as well as economically important. Many fishermen are dependent upon lakes. Flowing water such as lakes can be used to harness hydro-electrical power. It has so much importance, but man is subconsciously as well as consciously polluting it every second. People throw plastic bottles, trash and even religious wastes in the waterbodies. People also go for cruises in lakes. There, they leak oil, dispose food and other waste, just for amusement. So In short, man is cutting down the only tree which is needed for their life.

A River is a natural flowing watercourse usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea , lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water, whereas Lakes are areas filled with water, localized in a basin, surrounded by land, apart from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean, although like the much larger oceans, they form part of earth's water cycle.

How are Rivers and lakes are commercially important?
Rivers provided early humans with water to drink and fishes to eat. Floodplains provided fertile soil for crops, and the system called irrigation allowed people to use rivers to water their fields. ... Today, many places use rivers to produce electric power/Electricity/Hydro-electricity. The Water cools the generators and drives the turbines that produce electricity, and sustains the habitat and fish stocks that are vital to the commercial fishing industry.
In Detail:
How do rivers affect the economy?
The most important contribution of rivers is providing water for irrigation purposes and industrial uses. It also acts as a disposal system of waste water. There are many river based ports which increase trade and commerce between countries. Thus rivers act like lifelines of people and the entire economy of a country.
Why rivers are important to humans?
Humans use rivers for irrigation in agriculture, for drinking water, for transportation, to produce electricity through hydroelectric dams, and for leisure activities like swimming and boating. Each of these uses can affect the health of a river and its surrounding ecosystems. Importance of lakes : the great lakes give us benefit such as providing water, food for human use, water purification to support ecosystems . ... rivers carry water and nutrients to areas all around the earth . They play a very important part in the water cycle, acting as drainage channels for surface water. (i) A lake helps to regulate the flow of a river. (ii) During heavy rainfall, it prevents flooding and during the dry season, it helps to maintain an even flow of water. (iii) Lakes can be used for developing hydel power too. (iv) They help in maintaining a moderate climate. Humans play a major role in Water pollution: Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies, usually as a result of human activities. Water bodies include for example lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater. Water pollution results when contaminants are introduced into the natural environment. Various sources of Water pollution:

Sewage (Waste Water) Sewage is another name for waste water from domestic and industrial processes

Agricultural Pollution. The agriculture industry covers 76% of the land area of England and Wales

Oil Pollution

Radioactive Substances

River dumping

Marine Dumping

Accidental Oil Leakage

The burning of fossil fuels

Chemical fertilizers and pesticides

Leakage From Sewer Lines

People also exploit water bodies like rivers and lakes by introducing the water bodies to harmful germs and Pathogens.

BECAUSE OF SOME ERRORS SOMETIMES THE BARRELS OF OILS FALL IN WATER MAKING IT POLLUTED . ALSO SOME FACTORIES DO NOT TREAT WASTE MATERIALS PROPERLY BEFORE DUMPING THEM IN THE RIVERS . RIVER GANGA IS KNOWN AS AN HOLY RIVER IN INDIA SO PEOPLE DO RITUALS NEAR IT BEACAUSE OF WHICH THE WASTE OF RITUALS IS DUMPED IN THE RIVERS WHICH FURTHER MORE POLLUTES THE WATER .
