The entire time I was growing up there was only 1 back family in our town, and they weren't there for long. I felt afraid for them because I didn't think that they would be accepted. The 2 boys were fantastic athletes, so they were accepted. Would they have been anyway? Maybe, but I can't say for sure...

I grew up abroad, first memory of the States was when I was 14 when we visited. My first memory of meeting a black person I must have been around 8. They were two marines, one of them bought me a Pepsi. First Pepsi I ever had, I thought they were pretty awesome. When we moved to NC when I was 15, I heard people using the N word for the first so casually. I was shocked.

I remember my parents, my father specifically, shunning her because she was carrying a black child. I was 10. This created so much confusion to me because before that I didn't understand why the color of the baby mattered.

I never understood much as a child but I do remember the odd feeling it gave me. Wondering why they were so concerned about placing "me into a new culture" when now I see it has them hiding me from a culture that they should have never been scared of.

My ex had extreme issues with jealousy and would often refer to a black guy I had dated in a negative way, I would call him out for singling out that experience, but he would deny the correlation. I see now that it was all sorts of red flags.

I grew up in a low income area, attending an elementary school which was largely black. I remember building great relationships and I didn't receive any messaging about racial bias. I do remember being the only student in the 'gifted' program and being bussed to another school to participate, a mostly white school. I wonder if there were less black children in the program because they had been overlooked for the testing.
