Sara's life before the Holocaust

Sara Fortis was born in 1927, she was born in the small city of Chalkis. This village was close to the city of Athens. Sara was 100% Greek, but she celebrated Jewish holidays and went to candle lighting's. Sara never knew her father her whole life so this why she identified as Greek.

Her acts of resistance towards the Nazi's

In 1941 the Nazis arrived in her home town, Sara knew it was time to leave and fled to a small village called Kuturla. She fled from this village, leaving her mother behind. Shortly after this, she became a andante ( a resistance fighter). Going from village to village, she collected other women that also wanted to fight, creating an all female band of Partisans.Sara became and well known and respected figure by the age of 18 in the Andantes movement in Greece.

Sara was known as kaptenissa (Captain) Sarika. She led a female group of andante's and on their very first mission they impressed the male Andante so much they were allowed to join their band. Together they burned down homes, executed Nazi collaborators, and aided their allies in many ways.

After the war, andartes fell out of favor with the new Greek Government. Sara was arrested but owing her to her great reputation, she was released in a short time. She immigrated to Israel, where she met her husband and settled down with him
