In the Saki's short story, "The Storyteller," a bachelor on a train tells a story to three young children. Think back to your favorite short stories and books from when you were very young and try to figure out why they captured your interest. Next, write your own children's story. by Vannah Scarborough

My favorite story when I was little was part of the Sesame Street franchise. It was about some creature (he was like a skinnier Cookie Monster, I think) named Henry and I think he had to babysit either his cousins or his little brother. I can't remember a single thing about the plot but I had my mom read it to me every single night. I loved the book because of the pictures, even though they were mediocre, but I was obsessed with Henry.
Once upon a time, there was a old couple that lived in the suburbs of Philadelphia.Their names were Margaret and Edward. Every morning, they would wake up next to each other, kiss, and then go make their normal breakfast of coffee, scrambled eggs, peanut butter toast, and oatmeal. Their lives were swell. One day, they realized that they needed another soul in their quiet house. They took a stroll in the local park, around the corner from their house. Margaret heard a small barking noise coming from inside a cardboard box on the sidewalk. She opened it up, and saw a tan, fluffy corgi wagging its stubby tail. She called Edward over, who was admiring an ancient oak tree. They fell in love with the dog instantly. They walked back home, carrying the dog like one of their five, beautiful grandchildren, as they held hands on the way back. When they returned home, Edward got out two bowls, one for water and one for some kibble they had left from their late dog. "What should we name it," asked Margaret. "How about Oak," Edward suggested. "I love it so much." Margaret, Edward, and Oak lived happily ever after.

My favorite book was 'The Elf on the Shelf'. I was obsessed with my elf when I was younger. I always loved looking for him. I felt responsible for him. I was a strange kid. My favorite 'chapter' book was 'Lands of Pleasure'. This old book was given to me from my mom. Her grandmother (my great grandmother) taught with this book when she was a teacher. All of the stories talked about young kids and pre-teens. The stories were all really interesting and funny but every single story had a lesson in it. I loved the book so much. It had the really old look to it, which is one of the reasons that it is so special to me.

During one summer's day, a little girl is walking along the beach. It is almost sunrise. She feels the ocean breeze flow through her long hair. The seas looked like a frozen ice sheet. She sees the top of the sun slowly come up at the horizon. A flock of birds soon fly in front of the sun. She felt at peace with the ocean and sun. She heard a sound come from the ocean near her. She walked out to the tide. She saw a little baby dolphin lost from his family. She walked close to the dolphin. She placed her hand out so the baby dolphin could see that it's the little girl trying to touch her. The dolphin then makes a sweet sound. She acts as though the little girl is the family that this dolphin has been searching for. The little girl had to go in for breakfast. Later in the morning, the girl and her family went out into town. The little girl wanted to buy some fish and toys for her little friend. Her family wondered why but went along with whatever their girl was planning. The girl goes out...

My favorite children's books were the Pinkalicious books, the Giving tree, and there was a story about a pink poodle that I can't remember the name of but I read these books all of the time. The poodle book and the pinkalicous especially because I was obsessed with the color pink and they had a lot of pink pictures. The Giving tree was my all time favorite that I read basically every day. I'm not sure why I loved it so much but I think I liked how the boy and the tree grew up together and the tree gave him so much and was always there throughout his life and I liked the lesson it taught about staying loyal.

Once upon a time there was a mother goat who lived with her son in a cottage in the woods. One day she was baking and realized she ran out of milk. "I'm going to the store to grab some milk", mother goat yelled to her son. She told him, "Don't let anyone in unless they say the password, "Green grass grows red apples". "Ok Mom!" answered the little goat. She locked the door and began making her way to the market. Strangely enough, a Wolf was lurking near and heard what the Mother Goat had said. So, as soon as she was out of sight, up he trotted to the door and knocked. "Green grass grows red apples" whispered the wolf in the door. It was the right password, but when the young goat peeped through a crack in the door and saw the shadowy figure outside, he did not feel at all easy. “Show me a hoof" said the kid and when the figure couldn't show him a hoof the Wolf had to go away as hungry as he came.“You can never be too sure,” said the little goat, when he saw the Wolf making his way to the woods.

I had many favorite books, most from the same authors. I loved The Magic Tree House series and the Wings of Fire series. One of my favorite children's book was James and the Giant Peach. I liked it because I loved Roald Dahl. It was different from typical stories and showed a lot from the child's point of view. The story had many whimsical creatures and I remember sitting in the school library reading Dahl's books. I could relate to some of the characters and it showed that some adults are not always right. This book helped me notice that some people are rude and undeserving of respect while some adult treat you correctly and are very deserving of respect and privilege.
Once upon a time, there lived a prince. He was the most handsome prince in all the land. The king and queen spent everyday finding princesses for him to marry. The prince had no interest of finding love. He wanted to rule his kingdom fairly, unlike his parents before. Every princess the King and Queen chose was a completely moronic airhead. These dumb dumb princesses had no idea how to run a kingdom. In the end, the prince met a peasant who he loved and put a ring on it before devoting his life to the kingdom and ignoring his family.

I liked three stories when I was little: Caps for Sale (the story and illustrations were pretty and there were sounds my dad made when he read it to me that made me laugh), Circle Dogs (we had dachshunds growing up, so the story was relatable and the illustrations were pretty), and i also liked Goodnight, Moon (the pictures were pretty and the book always reminded me of warm, slightly buttery rice for some reason).
My Children's story:

Once upon a time, there were two children, a boy and a slightly younger girl, who went to an apple orchard with their families. Their parents were good friends, so they had become close at a young age. The children saw the parents talking, and decided to go exploring. They weaved in between rows of trees, and munched on apples all the while. Soon, the found a massive apple tree with apples of all sorts: red apples, green apples, yellow apples, gold apples, blue apples, purple apples, orange apples, silver apples, gold apples, and even rainbow apples. It almost seemed like nobody else could see the tree. The children reached up as high as they could but they couldn't reach any apples. They decided to climb the tree. When they reached the bottom row of red apples, they saw the prettier green apples right above them. They kept climbing, and saw the yellow apples. They climbed to the top and found the rainbow apples. The cool breeze swept across their faces and blew their hair around in silly shapes. They could see their parents talking and other children running around. The little girl reached out and plucked an apple from the branch closest to her. she turned it in her hand, and was almost certain it was as big as her head. The smooth skin gleamed in all colors, and was so enticing to eat. she nudged the boy, and they exchanged glances. They both took a bite of the apple, and suddenly, they disappeared in a poof of shimmery sparkles, along with the tree.

I founded it crazy that she had superpowers and that Miss Honey was her mom because I would of never thought that would happen in the beginning of the book. This book uses a lot of imagery which makes it easier for children to read and it helped me out.

Once upon a time there was this family that lived on the beach in New Smyrna Florida. All started on their teams and were the best surfers in the neighborhood. The oldest was name Stephanie, second oldest was Anna and the youngest was named Bella. They have a pet dog named Peanut Butter. Bella was in love with her dog and took her anyway the family went. They all would walk and go out to eat and of course they would always know its their family because they would see Peanut Butter. One day it was really hot and Peanut Butter wasn't allowed inside were they were eating on the beach, so Anna had to tie her up next to the restaurant the whole time. I think I liked this story because of the lesson it taught. There is an apple tree who loved a boy so much. She was very giving and he grew up to take everything from her. He realized what he'd done to the tree.

There once was a dog named Gerald. He wasn't the prettiest, but he had a heart the size of Texas. Gerald loved to play with Dave, his owner, everyday. Dave was looking for more than just a rugged dog, so he went to the breeder. One day Dave come home with another dog. Its name was Fido. He had the silkiest fur and glassiest eyes. Fido seemed so perfect and took Gerald's spotlight. Although he was pretty, Fido was evil inside. Gerald, getting no attention, thought Dave didn't love him anymore, so he ran away. Dave shocked and scared, was so worried about Gerald and looked for him everywhere. Once he found Gerald, he promised to never underestimate him again. He truly loved Gerald for his heart. From then on, Dave, Gerald, and Fido lived together in harmony, although they were all very different.

I liked the real story of Hansel and Gretel, which is a terrifying story of cannibalism and child abuse, that ends happily for the protagonists, this tale of the Brothers Grimm also has all the elements of an exciting adventure for children, including gingerbread houses, talking geese and hidden treasure. A man was forced to abandon his children at the command of his manipulative wife, the details of Hansel and Gretel’s captivity at the hands of the witch Hansel using the bone of a previous victim to trick his captor, for example, and Gretel eventually shoving the witch into an oven. Some of these events are still present in ‘sanitized’ versions, but many omit the more grisly details involved in the children’s escape from the gingerbread house. So as the youth in America got more sensitive so did fairy tales.
Once upon a time there was a housewife whose name was Jasmine she was a smart young lady and there was a duke named latrice.
