Estudió en Noruega y más adelante en la Universidad de Harvard, lugar donde comenzó a interesarse por cuestiones medioambientales y sociales.

Brundtland fue la primera ministra mujer de Noruega, y ejerció como tal durante 3 legislaturas (1981, 1986–89 y 1990–96).  Posteriormente, ocupó el cargo de Directora General de la Organización Mundial de la Salud entre 1998 y 2003.

Actualmente, es Vicepresidenta de la ONG The Elders, fundada por Nelson Mandela, en la que participan líderes a nivel como Kofi Annan y entre todos, luchan por la defensa de los derechos humanos en todo el mundo.
