The Oneida Community was founded as a utopian colony that focused on the redefinition of gender roles, a focus on community, and the creation of a “Heaven on Earth”. They broke down traditional stereotypes for marriage and family by declaring all members were “married” to each other. They ensured that women did not have to go unwanted childbearing, and that all children were raised communally. They also practiced communalism (communal property and possessions) and mutual criticism (a form of critique used as a form of control). All of these practices helped uphold their core values.

Decline of the Community

The Oneida Community began to decline when John tried to shift leadership to his son, as his son did not have the same beliefs or leadership capacity as his father. There were several debates within the community, and coupled with the unstable leadership the community began to lose its strength. The end came about when Professor John Mears held a protest meeting, resulting in a warrant for Noyes’ arrest on the charges of statutory rape.

Although the community only lasted around 32 years, the ideas that they practiced are still pondered over today. Noyes is credited with creating the term “complex marriage” and is the first example of that in practice. The breaking down of traditional family roles for women is another idea that is still being considered to this day. The Oneida Community is also regarded as one of the most successful utopian communities in American history.
