I love that RC is divergent and inclusive at its very heart. This would encourage students to share their insights without the filter of 'the right answer' restricting their thoughts and responses.

My concern would be advanced and deep readers who may be reticent to share due to their learning profile or other social dynamics that may affect the process. To what extent should we try to include them and what might be some of the good practices to facilitate their active participation?

The challenge also lies with the facilitation of the discussions - the types of questions we ask, our responses to their contributions and how we moderate their responses to each other. Community building?

Every child is unique and has different preferences. If the text selected for collective reading circles is not as welcomed or interesting to certain students within the class/group, how do we sustain their interest or cater to their nonchalance.

Is Reading Circles suitable for everyone? Or you would suggest pre-screening the children for certain dispositions or preferences. While the students may be HALs, not all of them seem equally keen on reading and responding to texts.

Although I question RC's suitability for all, I do see its benefits and the joy it brings to enthusiastic readers. Do you have pedagogies or strategies to encourage reluctant HAL readers/non-readers to also undertake the challenges of reading to construct meaning?

How do we motivate pupils to read and discuss effectively?

It can be somewhat daunting to open up for pupils to 'lead' the discussions because sometimes it may lead to topics/ ideas which we may be unfamiliar with. Although we can be prepared by reading up some ideas/themes beforehand, it is a learning experience whenever we facilitate such lessons. And it is also insightful to learn from pupils based on their knowledge, interests and even their perspectives. At the end of the day, we also must be able to show our pupils that we are learning - even from current affairs, and everyone is on the journey to explore and learn together.
