On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights activists organized a march in the nation's capital. This march included more than 200,000 people protesting for equal rights. This was a peaceful protest, and was one of the sparks to landing equal rights for African Americans. At the end of the speech, King made his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. This speech would go on to be a slogan for equal rights and freedom. I have a dream is a speech that has had a lasting impact to this day.

Minneapolis Protests

In Minneapolis, Minnesota, there has recently been an outbreak of protests. This comes in response to the death of George Floyd, who was killed by police in Minneapolis. These "protests" include dangerous riots, and demands to defund the police. This is not the only place where there are riots, though, as riots have broken out all over the country, all for George Floyd. The death of George Floyd started the revival of the social injustice movement, which has continued on for months. https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/05/29/chaotic-minneapolis-protests-spread-amid-emotional-calls-justice-peace/

While the Washington March was peaceful and did a lot more good than bad, the Minneapolis riots resulted in thousands of buildings burned down, and many people losing their way of life. This also came with many people and policemen injured from the riots. The riots were by far more dangerous, because the march involved only peacefully marching and the riots were a destruction of property.

After seeing these two completely different styles of protest, you can see that there has been a change over the past 50-60 years. The March was a peaceful protest that sparked a movement. The riots were people who are fed up and are demanding change. Even though they are completely different, they are still demanding the same thing; racial equality. This has been something our country has struggled with since it was created, and if things do not change there is no way our land of the free and home of the brave will last any longer.
