In middle school, I read The Outsiders. This is a great book to use to teach about contemporary realistic fiction. We can focus on themes, character development, and other real world issues. After reading, we can focus and discuss the characters in small groups. They can discuss the characters' conflicts, strengths, and weaknesses, etc.

A great way for middle schoolers to learn more about contemporary realistic fiction is for them to explore social issues through debate. We could split up into groups to debate an issue. This could be done from a specific book we are reading or letting each group pick a book and talking about the issues.
