They were critical battles of the 'Race to the Sea'. This is where German and Allied Armies were in attempt to secure and reach the French North Coast. Ypres was attacked as Germany went through Belgium to make it to the coast. These attacks destroyed and demolished the small town of Ypres.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

The French army went to defend near the Marne River, but the Germans were still able to get as close as 30 miles from Paris. The french army and the BEF (which is the British Expeditionary army) attacked Germany in the middle so they were in-between Germany's first and second army group and this caused Germany's communication to breakdown leaving them confused until the germans were all ordered to go back to a place near Aisne River, were they built trenches.</div>]]></description>
