On the first day, the British suffered more then 57,000 casualties.  In contrast, the French, suffered around 7,000 casualties.

The British and French armies fought the German army.

After two weeks of trench warfare, the allies attempted to break through German line on the Western Front. This battle lasted for 4 months and ended over 1 millions lives.

The Battle of the Somme, was one of the largest battles of the First World War, it was also one of the bloodiest military battles in history. The first battle of Somme was one of the most costly attempts to break the stalemate of the trenches.

Description- Three major battles were fought near the town of Ypres, Belgium, in WW1 The town is in western Flanders . It was completely destroyed by the fighting but has since been rebuilt.

The Battle of Ypres, Belgium was fought under 3 major battles, Battle of Langemarck, Battle of Gheluvelt & Battle of Nonnebosschen. They were critical battles of the 'Race to the Sea'. This is where German and Allied Armies were in attempt to secure and reach the French North Coast. Ypres was attacked as Germany went through Belgium to make it to the coast. These attacks destroyed and demolished the small town of Ypres.
