During my day, I discovered that there are three categories of actions I conducted that require access to the global internet. These actions included checking and responding to email, activities conducted for work, and completing assignments for classes at SFC. Email is a new activity for everyone, though in certain contexts, there were messages before email. In an office environment, for example, memos and post-it notes could be transferred between colleagues before email was invented. Education existed before the internet, though it has been greatly transformed by online learning, which requires internet access. I remember an incident that occurred many years ago. Before e-learning, I had discovered that my printer was out of ink minutes before a paper was due. I literally ran to the nearest store on-campus to buy an ink cartridge, ran back, installed the cartridge, printed, and sprinted to class. I made it -- a few minutes late -- but I made it. With online learning, this problem doesn't happen in the same way. At work, my entire job would not exist if the internet did not exist. At the moment, I am working with SQL and creating statistical reports to enable managers to click a button online and see relevant data. I have no idea what managers did before SQL, the internet, and tools such as MYSQL. Likely, the reports I help produce now did not exist. For the reports that did exist, the data would not have been in real-time.

I'd have to switch back to reading a printed newspaper, books, and watching cable or over the air TV.

My job is the Internet as a web application developer my entire day is debugging, enhancing, or just communicating to my co-workers about web applications. Yep, I'm either working on some server, authoring some backend/frontend code, html, sql... with my bluetooth headphones streaming 90's grunge rock or country. This work from home thing has really created a condition where I'm in my home office more often then not.

- Michael Lucas

Doing this assignment I have discovered that entertainment for myself would be something difficult to do if I would not have access to the internet. It made me realize how the internet has changed us. I remember back when I was around 7 or 8 years old, we would gather with my cousins and play in the front yard of my grandma's house for hours after school, and the only "online" device, if you could say online, was a TV where I would watch some cartoons and animes when my cousins were not around. I think the idea of now watching videos on YouTube is a new activity for many people since it has become popular where you can watch fun videos without any interruptions. Same could be said to other video platform such as Netflix, HBO, Hulu, and others where people can watch shows and skip parts that don't want to watch. I remember not many years back, that if you wanted to find out what would happen in you TV show, you had to wait a week or so to continue with the story.

- Renzo Chong Flores

Despite being connected to the internet at practically all times, it shocked me how little I actually need it. It provides a great resource for productivity and convenience; however, almost everything I use it for can be completed in another fashion. Email could be sent as fax, voicemails and text messages could be left on an answering machine. News could be obtained from newspapers, tv, radio etc. Online courses could be completed in person or via mail. Research could be completed at the library or by contacting experts. Entertainment could be from tv and radio broadcasts. Essentially, everything I do online has been done since before the internet. None of the activities that I completed were new or novel. Even from the perspective of internet usage, all of the activities that I completed have been around in one form or another for decades.

The only activity that I listed that I could not do if I was not connected to the global Internet was work. I have to be connected at work or I can't get my work done. I could potentially work in an IDE if I downloaded design documents, but that's not always the case. Plus, I have to be able to Slack my team! Every other activity I could do without the Internet, but it wouldn't be as convenient. One of my activities was Netflix,. Yes, I could pop in a DVD or Blu-ray, but Netflix has so many options and I don't own all of the shows/movies that are on Netflix.

Three of my activities are newer to everyone and those include working from home, streaming shows/movies, and streaming music. When I grew up there wasn't much working from home, but thanks to the Internet and technology it has become common (especially after Covid). When I was younger there was no "streaming" anything. I remember rewinding VHSs ("Be kind and rewind!"). Personally, I absolutely love streaming and rely on it a lot for entertainment. It would be hard to go back to a world without the Internet because I certainly use it a lot on any given day.

One thing I will never give up though is physical copies of books!

4 of the activities I do on a regular basis cannot be done without an internet connection. Some of these are homework (in Canvas) and my job. These activities are relatively new, as people did not use the internet for everything as extensively as we do now. In the past, all classes were done in person, with assignments done on paper. The introduction of personal computers and the internet has allowed for classes to be taken fully online, and without the need for paper assignments. My job also requires me to be connected to the internet, and because I work for an internet service provider, my job would not be possible without the internet. In addition, my leisurely activities would not be the same without the internet. I wouldn't be able to watch YouTube or stream on things like Netflix or Hulu, and we would still be in the age of DVDs and Redbox rentals. Also, online shopping would not be possible without the internet, and all products that we purchase would have to be found in stores.

Most of the activities in my Online Day activity could have a manual alternative, but the two that I would say I could not do to the same effect are checking for important emails from potential employers and logging on to canvas to complete my assignments. I still maintain some offline activities for my own entertainment, like drawing or reading books and graphic novels.

I take all of my classes online now because of the way my job schedules my hours, and I wouldn’t be able to complete any of my assignments without the internet. I have to be online to register for classes, to check on my financial aid, to study, to complete assignments, and to know if I’m on track with them. The internet is the reason I have my Associate’s degrees, and why I’m able to make progress on my Bachelor’s while I work. Even the field I and many of my classmates are going into is all possible because of the Internet, creating jobs for people to build and maintain the applications and services millions of people use daily.

Just about everything I do on the internet doesn't really have a real life alternative. Maybe email, with the alternative being normal mail, but normal mail is far less convenient and easy than email. Probably the main thing I do online in general that wasn't really possible before was interacting with people from around the world. I'm friends with people from various parts of Europe, South America, Australia, and even Japan. If it weren't for the internet, I probably wouldn't be friends with nearly as many people.

All of my classes are online, new friends were made through social media platforms so that is how I talk to them. Even my business is completely online. My main hobby which is reading is now online as well. I can't stand the music being played on the radio so I am always either playing Pandora or YouTube. I drive a lot to go places so as not to be bored in the house. I am always on my phone as a source of entertainment because of the instant dopamine and it is easier to look up information about my various hobbies.

-Francesca Chiriboga

I am a supervisor at Dollar General Warehouse, and I am on the computer for at least 85% of my day. Without the internet information would have to be prepared by hand. I wouldn’t be able to prepare charts or spreadsheets for company meetings and to keep my department employees aware of their performance. As I went through my day logging everything down, I realized just how much people depend on the internet to get through daily living. I am fairly new to management at the warehouse but not new to the computer system at the warehouse. The Zoom meetings are new for me, every morning at work we have Zoom meetings with all department managers to discuss company information.

Activities within my Daily Online Journal included Audible book files, YouTube videos, online textbook access, and watching Netflix on a Smart TV, and with the exception of Audible, all of these tasks were done with an internet connection. I say this because there were stories read out over radio waves and records, which are similar to Audible book files.

The only thing I use my computer for that doesn't need internet is my IDEs. Even if I can program without internet, I prefer to have that too because of the value the internet adds to the process of developing programs. There is always many things I can do more efficiently and subjects I can understand more. Using Google while programming helps me understand things better as I can search up anything that I am doing to find better ways or deeper understanding.

How many of these activities are essentially new to everyone, ones that were never done in the past?

Neither are new, people have been doing both of the activities I listed for decades. The only thing I could call new is using the internet to study, the process of studying is the same as it has always been, but having so much information ready and on the internet is a new concept. Either way I am just using modern tools to do what humans have been doing for a long time now.

How many activities did you list as things you could not do, even manually, if you were not connected to the global Internet?

10 of my listed 11 events throughout my day would not be possible without the internet. As all the things listed such as checking text and discord notifications, Scrolling Reddit, watching YouTube, watching Netflix, listening to podcasts, listening to music on Spotify, working on homework in Canvas and playing online games all require the internet to occur. As all these applications are hosted on the internet and would not be possible without it. Most of my daily activities day to day are completely online even at work. My life relies on the internet and without it I would not have a job, so I am thankful for it.

How many of these activities are essentially new to everyone, ones that were never done in the past?

Many of the activities I have listed are things that have been around forever but have evolved into platforms that are now available on the internet. For instance, Spotify is just the Radio through the internet rather than Radio and Netflix is just a movie theater that you can choose what is showing. YouTube at least the content I watch is very similar to the Science and Discovery channel on TV. However, YouTube is still a very new concept as it allows normal everyday people to create content and share it with the world. Reddit is also very new historically as it is a huge collection of user generated content for the entire world to view and contribute to. Lastly Online gaming is quite new and never seen in history until the advent of the internet. So many of my daily activities are new in the grand scheme of things and are only around due to the internet. Without them my days workflow would probably be quite different.

I had five things on my list of about twenty-five interactions that I would not have been able to do without the Internet. Every one of these interactions was related to my work as a remote software developer. Even then, I feel like I was being a little too relaxed with my alternatives by listing things like "turning in an assignment in person" for an online class.

The truth of those instances is that online class and most remote work would not exist without the Internet. There may be some niche job out there somewhere where a remote employee spends their time cold calling potential customers and sending physical spam to everyone, but that job is much more efficiently done using the Internet. The Internet even allows jobs like that to be phased out completely and replaced with bots that ask their targets about the condition of their vehicle's extended warranty.

Remote work is virtually a new activity that has only existed successfully because of the Internet. In my case I suppose some of my tasks could still be completed in a physical office, however using VMs on servers and VPN access could safely be considered a new activity. Schooling would still exist, but remote schooling would obviously be less successful if students and teachers had to wait on the postal service to deliver assignments.

The only thing there would be no replacement for is Youtube. Sure, television and radio is an alternative, but not a replacement. I can't think of any place where any one could just make their own little movies and broadcast it to the world. Music I was listening to could be found on the radio and the old PS2 games I was playing can be bought from collectors, but I can't fund someone's video project and get it broadcasted to everyone in the world on demand. Nothing like Youtube has ever existed besides smaller video sharing sites in the early 2000's like Albino Blacksheep or Newgrounds.

The biggest activity that has no offline equivalent is YouTube and Twitch. Television and radio do not properly emulate the communication between YouTubers and Twitch Streamers through chats. On Twitch, this communication happens in real-time. People can call into radio shows but that does not reflect the connection made by seeing the person's face on a web camera or seeing their game / computer screen. Commonly, people will watch YouTubers / Streamers play video games for the first time to see their reactions to games the viewer's love. This almost reflects the experience of going to a friend's house to watch them play games before the Internet.

Everything else I do daily can reasonably be done without the global Internet. Everything I Google search can be discovered in a book or by asking someone knowledgeable. My school work could be done in person the way it has always been done.

I would say this is relatively new to everyone. The Internet moves at a million miles per hour so it feels like these advancements have been around for a long time. However, reflecting back, the amount everyone is connected nowadays is pretty new still.

Three of them would have been technically possible such as making many phone calls instead of reviewing emails or sources posted online. However these alternatives would have been much more complicated and time-intensive. 4 of my activities such as listening to streamed music had pretty easy alternatives but still would limit the activity, such as only being able to listen to music previously downloaded or broadcast on the radio. Downloading files for my job I identified as completely impossible, because the alternative would have been having the files literally shipped in physical mail, and with todays deadlines that is basically not feasible. In broadcasting, television program files used to be much more often recorded live from the network feed, but now with so many files being required, that would be impossible to record them all. I don't think any of these activities of mine were never done in the past, except perhaps submitting homework assignments remotely, homework assignments would never really have been mailed via physical mail before the internet, or texted or called in of course!

Most alternatives are considerably less efficient than their web-based options. Most of our company works from home and we need to be able to communicate and work together in order to get the job done.

Some of the activities that are newer today that would not have been around in the past include checking social media, catching up on work instant messages and emails, playing video games with people from all over the world, and being able to work from home.

These activities are essentially unprecedented and were not done in the same way in the past. The internet has not only transformed existing tasks but has also introduced novel ways of communication, collaboration, and entertainment that were not conceivable in earlier times.

However, these all have the obvious caveat of being less easy than their connected alternatives and in some cases, require more time and money.

How many of these activities are essentially new to everyone, ones that were never done in the past?

Roughly 25 years ago, social media did not exist, especially not in the form we know it today. Though homework itself is nothing new, online homework was a foreign concept until very recently. Streaming TV only came into its own in the late 2000s. All of this means that the majority of my daily activities were only made possible within the last few decades.
