Since Austria declared war on Serbia, Russia who was an ally, mobilized their military and helped them fight. Since Austria was now fighting a stronger opponent, Germany, also a member of the triple alliance along with Italy, declared war with not only Russia, but Russia's ally France. Since two thirds of the triple entente, were involved, Great Britain joined the war. The Black Hand was "A secret society that was formed in 1911, consisting of Serbian officers and government officials who wanted to claim annexed Bosnia". They launched terrorist attacks on Austrian targets, and were responsible for the assassination of the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

He had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the assassination of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary because he was not illegible to receive the death penalty because of his young age of 19. The Black Hand terrorized from 1911 to the year 1917. After the assassination, "Colonel Dimitrijević was executed after having been found guilty of treason in the Salonica trial." Colonel Dragutin Dimitirjevic was the main leader and was in charge of the Black hand. He led the plotting of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. He trained 7 assassins and smuggled them into Bosnia. His plans went off without a hitch, because of his previous knowledge. In 1903,  he led the assassination of Serbia's King Alexander, which put him the head of Serbia's intelligence agency

In Document 1 of the DBQ Discussion Packet, The Triple Alliance and The Entente both had been building up their militaries. This was a result as the death of Austria's Archduke had occurred. It was stated that, "Austrian Grand Duke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated at Sarajevo in Serbia."

Another source had mentioned, "The Archduke and his wife were shot at point-blank range as they rode through the streets of Sarajevo in an open car." (Root Causes of WW1: MANIA)
