Land/soil.

Land/soil can affect a colonie vastly, being able to increase crop rates by twice fold, or decrease crop rates to almost zero. The fertility of the soil affects the crop rates. Land can also be a effect, the surrounding terrain can make it impossible to farm, live, and maybe even be there. If there was a swamp nearby, the soil there would be fertile, but the terrain does not allow for you to safely farm there... Massive floods may wash away your crops in a instant.
