"Captain Bezu Fache carried himself like an angry ox, with his wide shoulders thrown back and his chin tucked hard into his chest. His dark hair was slicked back with oil, accentuating an arrow-like widow's peak that divided his jutting brow and preceded him like the prow of a battleship. As he advanced, his dark eyes seemed to scorch the earth before him, radiating a fiery clarity that forecast his reputation for unblinking severity in all matters" (22).

"Outside Castel Gandolfo, and updraft of mountain air gushed over the top of the cliff and across the high bluff, sending a chill through Bishop Aringarosa as he stepped from the Fiat. I should have worn more than this cassock, he thought, fighting the reflex to shiver. The last thing he needed to appear tonight was weak or fearful.
The castle was dark save the windows at the very top of the building, which glowed ominously" (187).

"The heavily forested park known as the Bois de Boulogne was called many things, but the Parisian cognoscenti knew it as 'the Garden of Earthly Delights.' The epithet, despite sounding flattering, was quite to the contrary. Anyone who had seen the lurid Bosch painting of the same name understood the jab; the painting, like the forest, was dark and twisted, a purgatory for freaks and fetishists. At night, the forest's winding lanes were lined with hundreds of glistening bodies for hire, earthly delights to satisfy one's deepest unspoken desires - male, female, and everything in between" (170).

The tendency for to associate mystery and wonder with truth and form beliefs based on misconceptions
The book contains various instances of people believing in or being inspired by things that cannot be proven true e.g. Langdon's Mickey Mouse watch from childhood or how people blindly rely on their faith that the Grail exists. The mystery and wonderment provided precede the truth and facts.

"THE DA VINCI CODE, for all its success, is simply a poorly written thriller with a controversial hypothesis about the life of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. The characters are two-dimensional and the plot is boilerplate suspense novel stuff. Dan Brown has villains, chase scenes, and some moments of genuine tension. None of it is earth-shattering, though its intricacy is impressive."
https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/the-da-vinci-code#

I completely disagree with this review. This book is extremely well written. The sensory detail and descriptive diction in every sentence is unparalleled. I felt like I really got to know the characters throughout the book. Flashbacks into the classroom of Robert Langdon and the childhood that Sophie Neveu spent with her grand-père give you a new look into why they are they way they are. The story is full of unexpected twists and turns and double meanings. The book is not only entertaining and suspenseful; makes you think about and question history, art, religion, conspiracy, and the existence of secret societies.
