In verse 18, Allah forbids arrogance, including displaying a haughty expression towards others. One should not speak in a boastful or condescending manner, as such behavior reflects pride, which is detested. Instead, interact with humility and kindness, as these are marks of good character.

In verse 19, Allah teaches the proper way to walk and speak. A person should not walk sluggishly as if lacking purpose, nor should they walk with arrogance and pride. One should walk with purpose and balance. Similarly, when speaking, it is acceptable to be firm and clear, but not in a way that offends others or involves harsh words.

Maintaining balance in manners and behavior is a reflection of noble character.

When Prophet Ibrahim called his father to the truth, he addressed him with “Yaa Abati”, a phrase that reflects deep respect and love. He did not force his father but instead asked questions wisely, encouraging him to reflect and think.

In verse 43, Prophet Ibrahim conveyed his message based on the knowledge granted to him by Allah. With gentleness, he invited his father to the right path. However, in verse 45, Allah warned of punishment—not as an immediate threat, but as a reminder for people to return to the truth.

In verse 46, his father rejected his message harshly and even drove him away. Yet, in verse 47, Prophet Ibrahim remained calm and reassured him, saying, “Do not worry, my father,” as he continued to be there for him and prayed for his guidance.

Finally, in verse 48, Allah promised great rewards for those who abandon what is wrong. While politeness and respect should always be upheld, when faced with matters that contradict Allah’s commands, one must stand firm in defending the truth.

Surah Ali Imran

Verse 190

Everything that happens is according to the laws of nature set by Allah. The cycle of day and night alternates daytime allows us to work, while nighttime is meant for rest. Both times, however, can be used for worship.

There exists a special group of people, known as Ulul Albab, who constantly remember and pray to Allah, even when lying down or resting. They ask for their faith to be strengthened and to receive Allah’s pleasure. Everything in this world is part of His divine plan and cannot be changed. Every thought and reflection ultimately leads back to Allah. The universe itself is a sign of His greatness and power for those who contemplate.

Verse 191

In everything we do, we should have the intention of seeking Allah’s pleasure. Every moment can be utilized beneficially for example, scrolling through our phones while reciting selawat. Small acts like these can strengthen our taqwa (God-consciousness). Every action begins with intention, and witnessing the beauty of nature, such as a sunset, should deepen our gratitude towards Allah.

Verse 193

This verse signifies that we have become aware of the truth.

Verse 194

Allah makes many promises in the Qur’an, and He never breaks them. One of the most comforting promises is:

“With hardship comes ease.”

If this verse had not been revealed, our struggles might have felt even more difficult to endure.

Tadabbur (Reflection) on Surah Luqman

Manners in Speech and Behavior

• Do not raise your voice or make unpleasant facial expressions.

• Walk humbly, without arrogance.

Etiquette with Friends

• Be respectful.

• Help each other without expecting anything in return.

• Keep their secrets and never expose their flaws, as doing so can harm friendships.

• Pray for your friends, because when the angels hear your prayers, they will pray for you to receive the same goodness.

Etiquette with Teachers

• Teachers guide us in gaining knowledge and wisdom.

• Show respect by listening attentively.

• Express gratitude with simple words like thank you.

• Obey their instructions without complaint.

Etiquette with Animals

• Islam is a religion of Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin mercy to all of creation, including animals.

Etiquette with Parents

• A great example is Prophet Ibrahim, who never insulted his father even though his father made idols. Instead, he used wise and gentle words to make him reflect on his actions.

• Be polite, pray for your parents, and be kind even when they are harsh.

• Always remain humble before them.

A Story on Taqwa (God-Consciousness)

One day, Sheikh Al-Baghdadi had a favorite student, and people questioned why he was given such special attention. To answer them, the Sheikh gave all his students the same task: “Slaughter a chicken, but make sure no one sees you.”

All the students completed the task except for the Sheikh’s favorite student. When asked why, he replied, “I could not find a place where Allah does not see me.”

This story demonstrates the true essence of taqwa the constant awareness that Allah is always watching. Taqwa is not just about fear; it is about living with a deep consciousness of Allah’s presence in everything we do. It should be reflected in our actions.

Taqwa also means feeling content with what we have. It is like walking on a path filled with thorns, requiring caution and mindfulness with every step. This is closely related to ihsan, which is the awareness that Allah is always watching us.

• If we do not want to feel that practicing Islam is difficult, we should change our mindset to:

“I do this because I love Allah.”

• Taqwa is strongly linked to Ramadan. In the month of Sha’ban, Shaytan increases his efforts to tempt us so that we enter Ramadan unprepared, with weak faith and little motivation for worship. Therefore, Sha’ban is the time to fight against our own weaknesses and strive for self-improvement, so we can make the most of Ramadan.
