Epigraph Sean Murphy

The dominant primordial beast was strong in Buck, and under the fierce conditions of trail life it grew and grew. Yet it was secret growth. His newborn cunning gave him poise and control.
Jack London
Call of the Wild

In this epigraph a dominant primordial beast is present which is the natural and primary urge to follow the call of nature. It grows during the challenges of life on the trails. Nobody knew about it but it gave him a personality. Kramer included this because it is very similar to how McCandless felt this urge and left without telling anybody. There was graffiti inside of the bus saying "All hail the Dominant Primordial Beast." McCandless is telling people to follow the instinct to go back to nature. This applies to chapter 5 because in this chapter the reader sees the stubbornness of Chris especially when he returns all of the gifts that Burres gave to him. he wouldn't let other people shift his beliefs or keep him from his destination.

He abandons his nomadic lifestyle for a little bit, getting a full time job at McDonald's and opening a savings account. Chris soon quits his job, leaves the empty trailer he's been squatting in, and goes to visit Jan Burres and her boyfriend Bob in the Slabs (in California). He stays with them for a little while, and then decides it is time to travel 50 miles west to Salton City, CA.

Katherine Moffa

Krakauer's POV- Jessica Li

Following McCandless' journey, Krakauer documents much of Chris' hardships in an energetic and vivid persona, creating Chris' image in a constantly positive and rather refreshing light. Krakauer reverently defines Chris as a character almost greater than life, focusing on Chris' constant thrill in the self journey. McCandless is seemingly in control of every emotional aspect of his journey, always happy or thrilled by the changing plot of his journey, never caught off guard or regretting bold choices. In this way, as the readers close in on his inherently internal source of happiness, it's almost cruel to blame the man for living the life he wants. Any description of McCandless unrelated to Krakauer reinforces the positive light Krakauer has created on Chris. Even McCandless' idealistic viewpoints are sculpted to use as an inspiring story or a declaration of discovery and independence, the epitome of everything American inspirit.
