What strategies were underused? Which of the five areas do you want to incorporate more of this school year and why? Be sure to add your name to your post.

If I had to say I underused a strategy, it would be asking questions. I never really saw purpose or value in it, although I know that is something that good readers do. I didn't know how to teach it with meaning, so I stayed away from it. Even though it is not apart of the question, I can also add that I taught and coached on all these strategies, but I moved away from modeling it so students can see how all reading skills build and work together. This year I am going to lead my team, as well as support their growth in this area by doing recordings of myself in small groups thinking aloud for students. My biggest take away of chapter 2 was for struggling readers, think aloud is a model for them to see what good readers do to process what is read. For proficient readers, think alouds them them to a point where their writing and book conversations become more powerful.

Think alouds are powerful in the classroom, especially when working with struggling readers. This process supports our students when texts or concepts become challenging as mentioned on page 18, "When teachers explain their expert thinking in a way that students can understand, students are better able to imitate the thinking of their teachers." We offer students possible thought processes in order for them to become independent readers and critical thinkers.
Maricruz Zarco

Looking back, I feel that I have had students make connections too often. It is a reading strategy that I use, but since we need to rigor it up in 6th grade, I might need to use more of the other strategies mentioned in chapter 2. One specific strategy is synthesizing. It is imperative for our students to learn how to capture and understand the "big ideas" in a text, especially when reading nonfiction.
Maricruz Zarco

My biggest take away from chapter one is what the book was saying on whether we spend enough time preparing teachers on the skill of think aloud during professional training. For me, Think aloud is perhaps the most powerful tool that we can use in a reading workshop because students can see how we think as we read through a text and more importantly, getting students to develop their critical thinking skills. We must model so that students can be able to read, analyze, and interpret text successfully and gradually groom them into becoming successful independent readers. The biggest benefit I feel about think aloud is that students will be able to apply the skill of reading to their other contents and increase their self-esteem when reading on any subject.
David Bydalek

In reflecting on how I use think aloud in the past, I found that students were more engaged with their books after I model my process on how I think when I read. After reading chapter one I feel I need to plan more carefully on utilizing more of the strategies to make it effective for my students. One strategy that I would like to implement more often is synthesizing the text. I feel that will greatly help my students improve their skill of breaking text information into chunks and making the connection on how it is all related to the big idea of their book. I think it is highly important that we model our thinking process on a consistent basis for think aloud to be effective models for our students. In addition, I believe that as I model I must think carefully at exactly how I am going to articulate my thinking so that the students will understand it in a simplified way.
David Bydalek
