Inside the Rodopi Mountain-Range can be found a rich variety of ecosystems of the Balkan Peninsula. Almost 60% of the European species can be met here and this consist the main reason that the Rodopi Mountain-Range is one of the most important regions of Europe.

This noteworthiness variety of ecosystems is mainly due to its geographical position, the geological composition and also the fact that the Rodopi Mountain-Range was not covered with ice during the last glacial period. That has resulted in the Rodopi Mountain-Range to be a resort for many species from central and northern Europe and nowadays to be in their southernmost limit of distribution.

Almost 60% of the European flora species can be met here and it is the refuge of 211 rare or endangered with extinction species. Fifteen (15) of them are remnants of the tertiary period, 40 are endemic species of the Balkan Peninsula and 50 species are endemic of the Rodopi Mountain Range which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. In total it is estimated that the number of the flora species and subspecies is over the 1000 taxa (1115 recorded taxa from which the 827 are species and the 288 are subspecies). (References: Environmental Study of the Rodopi Mountain Range) .
The main vegetation zones with the individual forest ecosystems which exist in Greece can be found here. Specifically inside the RMRNP can be found:

Quercetalia pubescentis

Fagetalia

Vaccinio – Picetalia

Alpine and subalpine zone

It is worth to be mentioned that the western greek Rodopi Mountain Range is the southern boundary of expansion of Spruce where it appears in an extensive area in the unique Spruce forest of Elatia.

One of the main characteristics of the RMRNP is the rich avifauna. Until now there have been recorded 139 bird species. According to the Natura 2000 network database (http://natura2000.eea.europa.eu/#), 64 species of the Annex I of the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC can be found in the SPA areas of the RMRNP, from which 26 of them are migratory. Two of the most important bird species of the RMRNP are the Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus L.) and the Hazel Grouse (Tetrastes bonasia L.). These species are significant because their existence indicates a healthy ecosystem and also because the RMRNP is one of the last resorts in Greece where they can be met.

The rich diversity of mammals which dwells inside the forests of the RMNP had as result the integration of large areas into the Natura 2000 network and the characterization of the whole area of the RMNP as “protected”. According to the Environmental Study of the Rodopi Mountain-Range, in the area of the park can be met 57 mammalian species from which 14 of them are referred to the Annex II of the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC. The RMNP is one of the last refuges for the Brown Bear in Greece. The Brown Bear is threatened to extinction in Greece according to The Red Data Book of Greece, and is mentioned as a species of community interest under the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC and one of the largest carnivores that exist.

Other significant species of the region are the Chamois which dwells onto the steep slopes of Rodopi (the main population dwells at the old growth virgin forest of Frakto), the Red Deer which in Greece is threatened with extinction since the total population of the country is 20-30 individuals, the European Otterand many Bat species which according to The Red Data Book of Greece and the IUCN Red list, are mentioned as vulnerable, like the Daubenton's Bat, the Greater Noctule Bat and Geoffroy's Bat.

Other species which can be found in the RMNP are the Wolf (which in Greece is characterized as vulnerable), the Roe Deer, the Wild Boar, the European Wildcat, etc. (References: The Management Body of Rodopi Mountain-Range National Park )
