I really liked when Dale spoke about how pēpi are taonga, and as they grow, they are given responsibilities based on what their tūpuna and whānau see in them. Their mana is enhanced through the mātauranga they gain within the iwi, and eventually, the pēpi are returned to the iwi as contributors to their collective. This way of thinking is deeply traditional and reminds us to move away from individualised whānau structures and return to working together as a collective, where every person has a valued role and purpose.
