The name "Registan" means "Sandy place" or "desert" in Persian. The Registan was a public square, where people gathered to hear royal proclamations, witness public executions, and celebrate festivals. Today, it is renowned for its three majestic madrasahs (Islamic schools or colleges) that date from the 15th to the 17th centuries: the Ulugh Beg Madrasah, the Sher-Dor Madrasah, and the Tilya-Kori Madrasah. These buildings are celebrated for their elaborate Islamic architecture, featuring intricate tile work, grandiose domes, and minarets.
