When slavery took place it was unfair and unnecessary. Some of the indentured servants/ slaves would run away and attempt to escape and few others had the opportunity to start their life over after being a slave for a certain amount of years. Eventually they learned how to read and write and actually in very rare cases, when having been a servant, their master taught them how to. But to be an American, it to be free. Having opportunities to be your own person and living freely with no worries is the American Dream. Many were not considered "American" or didn't have the same rights as an ordinary "American" based on skin color or where people stood economically. But for those who were given the chance, started their whole life over and made many changes. Ironically, some slaves became masters and owned their own slaves. But many others worked as started a family, just as any other "American" would.
