Potato pairings & rotten vegetables were sometimes the dish of the day and for children born into this background this was exceptionally difficult for growth.

Children worked very long hours with no fresh air.  Children worked in factories,  in textile mills, in match factories,  as Chimneys sweepers,  in coal mines, as drawers or trappers. They had to clean machines while the machines were kept running,  tip matches into dangerous chemicals,  climb up inside the chimneys to clean them.
