If students aren't able to articulate/deliver their message in the classroom, I usually have them write it in their own native language and then I have them share with someone that speaks the same native language and have that student help him/her translate it into English [if they can].

Language impacts the way students see themselves in my classroom. The language they have heard in previous classes definitely effects them in the ELA classroom later. The majority of them think they are poor writers so we really have to be careful and positive with the language we use when it comes to writing. I also try to use students lingo when appropriate to keep them engaged and increase their success in my class. I think the tone and circumstance the language is used in is just as important however. Calling students out in front of others will never not shut them down. So those are just as important. I also have been trying to change the compliments I give students to be based on work ethic, motivation or intelligence instead of surface level.

It's still a work in progress but I feel that students started taking ownership of how they were speaking and keeping others more accountable when they learned how language can change.

They also need practice in specific uses of language. Changing your language depending on your environment is something most adults need to do. Students don't always recognize what these changes are, and when/where to use them. Identify formal vs informal, allowing for practice within each, and modeling when/where to apply is vital.

I use daily mental health check-ins and provide students with a chart of emotions so they can also develop their range of emotional vocabulary.

Wisdom....................................If you are not recognizing the pronouns that students would like to be called they may feel less valued and not recognized for who they know themselves to be. This is the same for students with ethnic names. We must recognize how names are pronounced (once corrected) and practice saying those names correctly as a sign of respect and acknowledgement of heritage or background.
