I think it is interesting that during a time where people are being killed for being Jewish, people in Zarki were still able to celebrate a Jewish holiday. It was a very difficult time were people were killed because of their beliefs and the fact that Jewish people Zarki were still able to celebrate Passover is a big deal. It shows that even though how they were living wasn’t ideal they were still incredible lucky.

Michael’s family had gathered to celebrate Passover and one of the people who wasn’t there was Sophie’s sister Hilda who Sophie had been very close with growing up. Everyone thought HIlda wasn’t coming because of the ban of traveling for Jews. What was surprising was that Hilda trusted someone who was not Jewish during the Holocaust and that she accepted their help and stowed away to Zarki to celebrate Passover with her family. The quote highlights how dangerous it was for her to do this and how much she risked just to see her family.

I chose this passage because surprised me that Israel thought that offering money to the Nazis to improve their living conditions would work because it could get him and his family killed and make things so much worse. He was successful and things improved but I wonder what would have happened if it hadn’t.

I think it is horrible that Israel had to pretty much choose who was being sent to their deaths and they were people were his family and people who he cared a lot about. I wonder what the people’s reactions were when they were being sent to concentration camps because of Israel.

Sophie, Israel, Michael, and Samuel had been sent to Auschwitz and were separated. Sophie had become very worried about what had happened to Israel and Samuel and asked someone if they knew if they were still alive and the man she had asked said they had been killed. I chose this quote because I can’t even imagine what Sophie felt in that moment because losing her son and husband must have been horrible. What I wonder is how someone after experiencing this can find strength and keep going even when something terrible happens.

Sophie had just found out that her husband and one of her sons had been killed and she had thought of the rock Samuel had given her because he loved collecting rock. Sophie then got really upset because she forgot to grab the rock from her skirt and that was the last thing Samuel would give her. I chose this quote because it shows how even really little things can have a lot of meaning because a rock meant so much to Sophie because it reminded her of her son who she was not going to see again. I wonder how Sophie would have felt if she still had the rock and would she feel any better about what had happened.

I chose this quote because when I read it I thought about how horrible it would have been for Micheal because he had gotten his hopes up and he had been let down. I wonder how the situation would have turned out it wasn’t Aunt Hilda that was there, but he mom

Men had stormed into the house when Micheal’s family was celebrating and they had come to punish Jews that came back to Zarki, but Hilda came up the idea to have Ruth tell a prayer because she had been raised by nuns and this ended up saving them because it convinced the men that they were not Jewish. I chose this quote because I found it surprising that Ruth, who was around 5 years old had managed to save everyone by saying a prayer. I wonder what would have happened if Ruth had been too scared to help or if Hilda hadn’t come up the idea to have Ruth says prayer.

Micheal stated the give up hope in finding his mom, but she is alive and she finds him. I wonder what would have happened if Micheal hadn’t have found his mom. Would his life turn out a lot different?

Micheal and his mom had been living in a building with a landlord that wore a swastika necklace and openly showed her dislike towards them and when Micheal had a really bad day and she took care of him and comforted him. I chose this quote because it shows how people can change and even though the were from two groups that don’t get along they were able to put aside their differences. I wonder if what happened to Micheal hadn’t have gone through what he did, would the landlord have became friendly words Micheal and his mother.
