My name is Lawren Phillips and I am a graduate student at Angelo State University. I currently teach middle school in a rural East Texas town and work beside my husband who is a youth pastor. We have four children and enjoy family activities above everything. Upon graduation, I plan to work on starting an organization to help preteen and teen girls with life, friendships and decision making.

This assignment really helped me dig deep into my roots and my current state in order to understand where I come from in a counseling standpoint. I learned what my true goal is in counseling and what my purpose will be as I help others. It was a great time of reflection on how I became the person I am and my goals behind what I want to do. I plan to use my experiences from childhood to present day to relate and understand the individuals I help at a deeper level.

This was probably one of my favorite assignments throughout my entire degree program as well as the one that I am the most proud of. I absolutely loved creating an engaging plan to help young girls with bullying. As a middle school teacher, I see how so many types of bullying from silent to out in the open, non-verbal to physical. It is heart breaking to see how many of my students deal with this on a daily basis and feel that they have no voice to get help. I will use this and edit it as needed for groups as a counselor to help my girls that I work with learn how to use their voice and internal strengths to over come these obstacles.

For my conference topic, I chose to focus on identity. As a middle school teacher, I became more aware than ever how young people begin to struggle with who they are. It is a hard pill to swallow knowing that many of our young people struggle with their true identity. They need people who will help guide them in understanding their roots, their dreams and their desires. There is so much research to look at in order to understand what is going on in the minds of each of these individuals in order to help them process all of the feelings they are sorting through.

This activity helped me understand the importance of research and knowledge on topics as well as the importance of being a continuous learner. Research and staying in the know of the latest studies as well as the earliest studies are such a big part of being successful in our counseling careers. While so much has changed, there is a wealth of knowledge in the earliest research completed by people with only people to work with rather than technology. There is also a wealth of knowledge with the research completed in modern day by people with the resources and advanced technology. With this being said, I will not discount the old or new research but instead use them in correlation to be the best counselor I can.

Throughout this assignment, I learned a lot about my community and where there is support as well as where we need more support. This assignment gave me so much insight into the makeup of my community and school system. I found very surprising statistics and information on who our school serves and who our stakeholders are. I have a clearer understanding of what I need to do in order to involve the community from young to old, wealthy and economically disadvantaged.

So much in this assignment made me reflect on myself. I had no idea how unhealthy I was in terms of the wellness wheel. I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing this information with others around me as well. I have modified this concept for ministry purposes, youth purposes and to use in my middle school classroom as well. It has been really neat to see so many people benefit from this concept and utilize it in their own lives. This is something that I will start off using in my classroom from the beginning of the year coming up.

While I feel like the job opportunities with this degree are virtually endless, I have almost settled on the idea of being a teen life coach for females. I have realized that so many females struggle in so many different aspects of life that I can easily relate to because I have been in their shoes before. I loved this activity because it helped me make a connection of my future role to the people that I can collaborate with when it comes time. After this assignment, I look forward to my future roles.

Resumes have always been something that I struggle with so I appreciate the assignment to make an up to date digital resume that looks so much nicer than my black and white basic resume. I like that this gives me the option to modify based on the position I am applying for but I have a steady base of a resume that gives an aesthetically pleasing look and all of the information that is needed for a job.
