During a time of social and political change, he had a big task to take care of. Also, the failure to lead the Russian army, lead to him being abdicated. As a result, he was under house arrest for more than a year and later him and his family were executed.

Below is an image he wrote to the Union after he was abdicated.

Rasputin was a very "holy and intelligent man." He was voted to the throne after Tsar Nicholas II failed to fulfill the Russian people's needs. After given time of being the Tsar, he was starting to slowly heal and reform the Russian country. Of course, Tsar Nicholas II became jealous. Therefore, Prince Felix Yusopov used his wife Irina as bait. He told Irina to invite Rasputin over because she knew he has a rather sexually active life. The night of the planned murder Felix attempted to poison Rasputin. After a few minutes, it appeared to not have been working so Felix simply shot him.

http://history1900s.about.com/od/famouscrimesscandals/a/rasputin.htm
