The French Revolution started because the French government

was unfair and favoring the rich and wealthy. The

government decided not to tax the clergy and the nobles.

Instead they taxed the poor lower class. If you were born in a

lower class you could not move up no matter how hard you

worked. 97% of the France's population was in poverty. In 1787,

the country was nearly bankrupt and a loaf of bread cost a

weeks worth of money. People were starving while the rich

lived luxurious lives. The lower class then started to resent

the upper class. This and the American Revolution started

the uprising.

What Part Did America Have?

When the rumors of the French Revolution first reached America,

the Americans wanted to help. The Americans wanted to help the

french rebel against their government so the French could develop

a democratic government like the U.S. But America was worried

about France's political instability, violence and social change.

So important figures like Thomas Jefferson and Alexander

Hamilton developed opinions on how America should go about this.

Thomas Jefferson was pro-French Democratic-Republican party

and supported democratic-republican ideals of the French Revolution.

On the other hand, Alexander Hamilton created the Federalist Party. He

was skeptic about the whole thing and didn’t want the British to stop

trade if they went on the French side. Both sides of American parties

both thought that joining France would lead to economical disaster

and invasion so they decided to be neutral and not take sides. 1790-1794

is when the war became violent. After French King Louis XVI was

killed, Britain, Spain, Austria and other European countries joined the

war against France. British then attacked American ships because

they stayed neutral in the French Revolution.

The guillotine was used in the war to chop off people's heads.

The first life that it took was a man named Nicolas Pelletier

on April 25th, 1792.
America's Visitors

Because the war was so violent, French refugees went to America and talked about the

French cause in American newspapers. When a French spy named Victor Collot noted

the weakness in the American West boarder, tension was created between the French

and Americans. So the congress passed the Alien and Sedition Acts to stop so many

French from coming here. The Alien and Sedition acts did not allow French refugees

to participate politically and to make it longer and harder to earn citizenship. So

French refugees went back to Haiti and France where it was politically calm. Congress

wanted citizens to vote for John Adams so they would have a president that was against

the French Revolution. Swing voters then voted for Thomas Jefferson (pro French) instead

of John Adams (against French). Americans sympathized with the French but never

got involved.

By doing this project, I learned how the young U.S reacted

to different senarios, what the rest of the world was

like , and what France's government was like

and how it handled it's citizens. I think it was very cruel

how the French government treated the peasants. It just

reminds me of how cruel leaders can be. I am very glad

we had a good leader for our country

(George Washington). I also realized why America acted

the way it did- to stay neutral. At first I wanted America

to help the French, but as I did more research, I

realized America had good reasons to not join the

drama. This project helped me understand what it was

like in that time period and how each country dealt with

the situation.

Although

I don't think they solved things properly with all of the violence.

The French Revolution caused conflict in America which was

very interesting because we are across the ocean. It divided

very important people in our country and pinned them againist

each other and ulitimately ended with Jefferson resigning which

effected our nation a lot.
